Brereton family in Mow Cop, Staffs
« on: Wednesday 01 October 08 03:58 BST (UK) »
I have draw a blank on my search for the parents of my G Grandparent >:(, Frances Brereton who was born in Mow Cop abt. 1866. I believe the father was Thomas and the mother may have been Emma? There is only one Frances Brereton I could find in the UK BDM, born in 1868 but not with a father named Thomas. It would be good to find this family as I only have Frances, perhaps the Parish Records? Frances married James Beresford at Stoke-on-Trent in 1888 she was 22 years old.
Any help or others looking at the same family would be appreciated.

Hi to all, Thanks for the help so far but it is still puzzling me and I have been unable to find this next link back. I have the marriage cert of James Berrisford and Frances Brereton. They married in 1888 (he was 47 and she was 22!) Frances father was named as Thomas Brereton (Blacksmith). Frances & James were living at Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. On a Census showing James & Frances her birth place was Mow Cop, Staffs. There is a Thomas Brereton & Emma Eliza in the 1871 Census as noted by Russ, but no confirmed link with Frances... it was a possibility.

Hi,
I am living locally to the Mow Cop area and Frances Brereton was my great great grandmother. Her b/cert shows her mother as Emma Brereton. Frances - dob 28th Feb 1868, place Mow Cop - was illegitimate - father unknown.   Frances' mother, Emma Brereton, went on to marry Enoch Whitehurst and had 2 sons Enoch and Amos. They all appear in the 1881 census with Frances however, she is entered as Frances Whitehurst rather than Brereton - which is why you haven't been able trace her. Frances married James Beresford in 1888 after she also had an illegitimate child (my great grandfather Sydney Brereton in 1887). The father of Sydney is not known. Incidentally James Beresford had emigrated to Australia but returned to England after the loss of his wife and child. William Brereton dob 1806- Mow Cop - was the grandfather of Frances and he was married to Mary. In 1871 census Emma (daughter) and Frances (grandaughter) are shown in his household. I think the father of William Brereton is Abraham born 1786ish. Hope this helps.

Hi Minnniec, Thank you very much for the info, it certainly helps and explains why I have been having difficulty finding the links. I was aware of James Beresford going to Brisbane Australia around 1876 and have all the details on the births and deaths of their children and the death of his first wife Mary Elizabeth Richards. From memory she died giving birth. I have the first born child of James & Frances as Sidney Brereton born or registered at Harrieshead, Stoke-on-Trent 1888. Was this the illigitimate son before marriage? FYI James Beresford & Frances Brereton were my Great Grandparents. My surname is Beresford and I have visited Mow Cop and the ancient building on the top of the small hill (cop). If you are interested I'm sure that I can add to your research with the view to share info with you. Nigel

Hi Minnniec, As mentioned in my earlier post I have the marriage certificate of James Berrisford & Frances Brereton. Her father was entered as Thomas Brereton (Blacksmith) I am also aware that Frances's mother was Emma. Do you have a Birth Cert for Frances? I note that you have the Grandfather of Frances as William Brereton (b 1806) who would be the father of her mother   NOT her father. Hope that makes sense as you mentioned that Frances was illigitimate!  Do you have any more info on the grandfather of Frances married to Mary???. Was Frances death in 1927? do you have a date and place etc or death cert.

Hello All
New to the chat site. I am researching the Berrisford family in particular James who went to Australia and returned. If anyone can help with information of the events in Australia I would be grateful. James is my cousins great grandfather. His grand daughter Lily is my cousins mother
many thanks
