Jane POTTER nee LUXTON
« on: Wednesday 01 October 08 02:08 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am  fairly new to this board but I am hoping someone out there can help me.
Jane LUXTON was born April 2 and bapt. July 25, 1813 at
Topsham. Topsham School Record gives entry dated of 1819 for Jane Luxton
age 6 d/o William; gone to make lace. She married my William POTTER, widower, yeoman, on June 5, 1833 by banns at Topsham. Witnesses were Joseph Colman, Sarah Luxon, Onesephorus Luxon.  They moved back to William's home in Kentisbeare, Devon.
William POTTER died  in 1839 in Kentisbeare. Jane was one of the executors and signed the papers at probate but I have lost her after that..
Does anyone have this Jane in their family line.. and can help me determine what happened to her.
Thanks

I have a few Luxtons from Ottery st Mary in my tree - but noone called Onesephorus Luxton.

Mind you my Luxton line is NOT complete.

I dont have any Jane Luxton born 1813, and the first William Luxton I have was born in Ottery St Mary in 1828, son of Robert Luxton and Elizabeth. Robert was born around 1771 - but thats only going by the 1841 census.

This (first) William Luxton's grandson married a Burrow (hence the connection to my tree) and their grandson is my 3rd cousin.

BURROW, BICKHAM, EVANS, SULLEY, STONE - Devon
STEPHENS, MALLET, ADAMS - Cornwall
HANCOCK , BUSSON - Somerset
MCCALLUM, MCDIARMID, MCNEILL - Argyle, Scotland
WALLS, SUTHERLAND, SIMPSON - Orkney, Scotland
FAIRBAIRN - Fife, Scotland
THOMPSON - Aberdeen, Scotland

Good morning,

I have been away from this site for several months because of a life threatening illness in my family (my wife - she is now well on the road to recovery) and have therefore only just begun to catch up with posts.

I am researching the Potter name in relation to my grandfather.  The father's name on my father's birth certificate is Philip Daniel Potter and his occupation is given as a butler.  My grandmother was living at Tisbury Wiltshire at the time of the birth.  Census checks etc have revealed no Philip Daniel Potters but there was a Philip Henry Potter from Devon in the censuses.  My grandmother was, not to put too fine a point on it, wayward.  She had a goodly number of relationships and a number of illegitimate children.  All of the birth certificates have a father shown although in two cases the father denies paternity (in divorce proceedings in 1901).

The one thing one can say about my granny is that she always put a name for the fathers of her children and those people did exist.  I am therefore trying with absolutely no success at all to research the Philip Henry Potter from the census.  Perhaps he was employed in the Tisbury area of Wiltshire around the turn of that century I don't know.

If one assumes(I know one never should) that Philip Henry is my grandfather then he is the son of John Potter of Sticklepath, Devon.  Philip's siblings were George, Andrew, Maria and Emily.  John in turn had 2 siblings Frances and William H.  William H was born about 1831.

I have "played around" with these names but have so far been unable to prove any connection with my grandmother however tenuous.

As a shot in the dark is there any possible connection between my William H Potter (living at Ellacombe, Torquay at 1891 census) and your William Potter.

Regards

Alan

I have copies of the Topsham Parish records dating back to the 1700's. I sourced them from the University of Michigan. My family is Potter
There were many Luxtons in Devon.
Jane was born to William and Dinah on Jan 29, 1806. That may be her baptism date.
She married William Potter, Widow, yeoman, , on June 5 1833

I can find no further records of Jane Luxton in Topsham after their marriage.
