COOK, William, Somerset
« on: Tuesday 30 September 08 22:19 BST (UK) »
My Greatx3 grandmother Matilda Cook married John Cox on 25 Dec 1843 at Curry Rivel Parish Church in Somerset.  Matilda was born, according to census information, in West Lydford or Keinton Mandeville (close villages). Her father is listed as William Cook (stone cutter). It doesn't say where William was born but Matilda and John start off married life in Curry Rivel, then move to Downhead, nr West Camel and then finally to Keinton Mandeville where they remain.

William was a stone cutter and there was (and still is) a quarry in Keinton Mandeville so that would suggest he possibly lived there at some point (also Matilda was born there).  Curry Rivel is more than 10 miles from Keinton so not possible to live in Curry Rivel and walk to Keinton to work.

There are several family of Cooks in around Keinton Mandeville, West Lydford, Wheathill - all villages close enough to the quarry in Keinton.  On one census I have found one couple - William born b1791, wife Mary b1791, with son William b.1821 all born Wheathill.  I'm guessing this is Matilda's parents and brother but I can't prove it. Matilda b1821 was already in service by first census so not with her family.  Can anyone find a baptism record for Matilda which might throw some more light on this?  Also I would like to find out more about William Cook's parentage and his wife Mary - what was her maiden name?

Are there any bright sparks out there who can help?

Your posting was very interesting to me. Two of my great grandparents were born in Keinton Mandeville (K.M).My great grandmother was Nellie Augusta Cox (born 1895) her father was William Charles Cox (born 1871 in K.M), his father was James Cox (born 1845 in curry Rivel) and his parents were John Cox (born @1823 in Curry Rivel) and Matilda Cook (born @1824 in West Lydford).
But then If I go to my Great grandfather Frederick Arthur Paul (born 1890 K.M), his mother was Leah Cox(born 1867 in K.M) her mother was Jemima Cox (nee Cook) (born 1844 in K.M) and her father was Jesse Cook (born 1822 in K.M).On his marriage cert it says his father was William Cook Stonecutter.I have thought for sometime that Jesse and Matilda were siblings but have so far been unable to prove it.
Just to confuse matters even more, Jemima Cox (nee Cook)( born 1844) married a George Cox (born @1842 in Curry Rivel).
Don't know if this helps you any...but if you have any other info I would love to hear it.

The marriage certificate of Matilda (Cook) and John (Cox) gives her father as William Co.  Some time ago I make a comprehensive list of all the Cooks on the 1841, 1851, 1861 censii, in and around KM, and there were only three entries which listed a mother and father whose age would have made them possible candidates for Matilda's parents and one of those was a "William".  If your ancestor Jesse, of same age, had a father William Cook of KM, then it's sounds very much like Jesse and Matilda were siblings.  Is anyone going to Taunton Archives and could look this up?
