Thomas Wilkinson - Sabden
« on: Tuesday 30 September 08 05:40 BST (UK) »
I am looking for info re Thomas Wilkinson born c1832. He was married to Sarah (unknown) born c1835.
In 1861 census, Thomas was a mechanic, living with Sarah and their children John Robert c1857 born Sabden
Edward c1859 born Habergham Eaves
James c1860/61 (he was 5mths at time of census) born Habergham Eaves
They lived at Habergham Eaves in this census

In 1871 they lived at Bury and Thomas was a publican. Family was:
Thomas
Sarah
John Robert
Edward (now born Burnley)
Mary Jane c1863 born Burnley
Minnie (transcribed as Emmy) c1870 born Bury
Alice Dixon servant born Habergham Eaves

In 1881 the family was:
Sarah  head widow
Edward born Burnley
Mary Jane born Burnley
Minnie E born Bury

In 1881 Edward married Martha Peak at All Saints Church Elton and the marriage cert states Edwards father was Thomas Wilkinson mechanic. Edward was a telegraph clerk

In 1891 Edward married Jessie Whittaker nee Rutherford at the Parish Church St Mark Bury. This cert also states father as Thomas Wilkinson mechanic.

Neither cert states father as deceased, so I can only assume he was still alive at these times. I do not have Edward's birth certificate to check Sarah's maiden name.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Julie

Without a cert you cannot be sure of the maiden name BUT

on the Lancs BMD site there is a record of a Thomas Wilkinson marrying Sarah HORSFIELD at Ribble Register office in 1853.

The registers for that are at Preston.

On Hugh Wallis' IGI Batch number site for Sabden Baptist church there is a baptism of Sarah HORSFIELD on 26th DEC 1834 with parents

From the same site in the Sabden records

Thomas WILKINSON
Birth 12 Feb 1832

parents John WILKINSON
Jane TAYLOR

It could be co-incidence but the only children that have two names have both grandparents in them in the same order.

Hi,

I think Madpants is correct but you would need a birth certificate for one of their children to be certain of the correct marriage.  Edward would probably be the best one as he was registered Burnley in 1858 according to LancashireBMD.

Also Marriage certificates didn`t always record that the father was deceased.  There is a death of Thomas Wilkinson in Bury in Dec. Qtr 1871 aged 39.  This would fit and probably explain why there were no more children after Minnie.

Thomas is living with brother Edward on the 1851 census and his occupation was Mechanic.  Reference HO107/2253 folio 67 page 11.  O.K. I know it states born Read but the parish of Read actually stretched up almost to Sabden Bridge which is now known as  Sabden.

On the 1841 he is living at Blackhill, "Padiham".  Blackhill is the hill between Sabden and Padiham .  Reference HO107/509/15 folio 24 page 6.

Mo

To Madpants & Mo,
Thanks you very much for your assistance. I was beginning to wonder exactly why I was even looking at family history, as I have hit those brick walls at every turn lately, and was almost ready to give it up!
You have made my day, and given me the incentive to keep on trying to knock down the barriers.
Much appreciated.
Regards

You need to consult the works of Dr J A Laycock. He was a late Victorian and village doctor in Sabden. He was an avid genealogist and collected together information from all local church registers AND collated the information into family trees. No doubt there will be several pages of Wilkinsons. There are around a dozen volumes of his pedigrees and other local information that he collected and they are held at Burnley reference library. In the past few years they have been microfilmed and the handwritten volumes taken off the shelves. Book yourself in with a viewer and be prepared to be amazed!!!!!

Hello Kevmac,

A warm welcome to Rootschat.

You would probably have been better to start off a new thread rather than attaching it to this one.

Are you looking for your family before 1881 or after?

Regards,
Mo

To Audrey,
This is an extremely late apology. I didn't respond to your reply on this thread as I have only just seen it. I had no notification of your reply, or anything after it. ???
Thank you for your reply. If I can find anything on the net re Dr Laycock, I will certainly be checking it out. I am in Australia, so booking myself in for a viewing could prove difficult! ;D
Anyway, once again, I apologise if you thought I was being rude and ignoring you.

Best regards,
Julie
