Thomas Collins - Chirk parish
« on: Monday 29 September 08 06:44 BST (UK) »
Hi everybody,
I'm look for my gggg grand father Thomas Collins. He was married to a Mary Parish in Chirk Wales on the 27th of March in 1815 at St Mary's and they had all 8 children in the area of Chirk. Now I can not find his birth any where. I have not seen the original marriage entry because I live in Australia. Too see if there is a fathers name on there.
He died in 1835 in Pen Y Bryn, he was a Coal Miner and he as far as I know was born in 1795 and I thought it was Chirk but all my research has come up with nothing.
Can any one help please. May be sight the original if they live in the area.
Thank you so much

Hi

The name is very familiar.

I have Par(r)ish ancestors in Chirk and have most of the St Mary's  records.

I know that the Par(r)ishes were Methodists in the middle part of the 19th century

I'm away in Scotland at the moment but will check my records when Iget back on Wednesday  :)

Hi Again

I have very sketchy notes up here - Mary Par(r)ish was bpt or born  25 June 1793. Daughter of William Parrish and Mary Hughes. I'm descended from her elder brother Thomas.

I have more info on the line in Newcastle but you can click on my website direct tree link:

http://www.ancestral-tales.co.uk/html/parish_line.html

for outline info.

Regards

Hi Tracy  :)

I've had a preliminary look at my records, etc.

First of all, the Mary that I gave you died (my scribbled notes in a margin!). William and Mary Parish had another daughter, Mary, bpt. 1 Feb 1795, born 19 January 1795.

Marriage:

27 March 1815 Thomas Collins (collier) and Mary Parish (with consent of her parents). Witnesses were John Pritchard and Charlotte James. All made their mark rather than signing. The couple were both 'of this parish' but, given that there was only a 3 week residency period for marriage by banns, Thomas need not necessarily have been born in Chirk.

I can't find a baptism for him in Chirk. The only other Collins mentioned around that time was a Benjamin Collins. Thomas Collins was a witness at the marriage of my Thomas Parish to Ann Hughes and both Thomas and Mary witnessed brother John Parish's marriage.

Children - all baptisms:

20 Aug 1815       Charlotte
28 Sept 1817      James
2 Apr 1820          Benjamin
10 Nov 1822        William
24 Dec 1824       John
1 Jan 1826          Mary Ann
22 June 1828       Sarah
21 Aug 1831        Caroline

Thomas is given as a collier in all these recoerds

Burial:

17 May 1834  Thomas Collins of Penybryn. Aged 41.
This gives an approx birth date of circa 1793.

They appear to have lived in the Pentre/Halton/Black Park area which was where the rest of the 'clan' and many of my ancestors lived. Thomas was most likely to have worked at Black Park Colliery.

The Par(r)ishes moved to the Chirk area in the mid-late 1700s from the Wellington/Wrockwardine area of Shropshire - the area which is  now called Telford. I'm thinking that Thomas (and maybe Benjamin) came from that area as well or from another part of Shropshire/Staffordshire. There was an influx of coal miners from there to the area around that time. Alternatively, the could have come from one of the nearby parishes. I have most of the records for these areas and will look over the next few days (lots of parishes to search through!). Another point that I think I mentioned in my earlier message was that some of these ancestors were Methodists and would therefore not appear in the baptism records.

I'll report back!

Regards
