Hi Cajondy

Could you please provide some date references?
And if applicable 1841-1901 and you already have any Census for any of them, perhaps note that down too.

Cheers  ;D

thanks for the reply

the only information I currenlty have is that he died at the age of 86 was buried with his wife MArtha @ St Mary's & St Michaels, Egremont 22nd March 1844

They had seven children - all baptised in Egremont names and dates as follows: John , a Blacksmith, 15 Feb 1783 - William, 13 Dec 1788 - Henry , a Stonemason, - Mary - 22 June 1794 - Joseph 10 April 1796 and the twins Isaac and Martha 3 and 4 May, 1799.

The only census record I could find was 1841 which shows a Henry Gainford at Preston Quarterwork house, Parish of St Bees, Whitehaven District - shown as paper maker aged 80
but there is an age mismatch with his "86 year old when died in 1844 information"

thanks for helping

Hi Cajondy

Don't forget - the 1841 Census rounded ages down - so in all probablilty, if he was age 86 when he died in March 1844, then he was about 83 in Jun 1841 - and this would have been rounded down to 80 for the Census!

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~staplehurst/About_1841.htm
The correct age was to be written for everyone under 15 years of age.
For persons 15 and over, the age was to be rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5.

Cheers

hi there
that's a useful tip I wasn't aware of before - thanks for that... It also explains why I've come across so many minor age discrepancies in my research!!  Doh  ::)

Hi Cajondy,
Henry Gainford and Martha Guest were my g g g grandparents and I've been searching many years for Henry's place of birth.  Can I ask how you know he came from the Eskdale area?   I'm thinking that he linked up with the Gainfords of the mid 1700s in the Dean/Winscales area of Cumberland but can't prove that yet.

Hi there
I have no cast iron evidence he was born Eskdale - only information provided by some fellow tree members on Genes... Not sure where they got the information on - but my cousin 1R (a gainford) seems to think he may  be from workington area - but not 100% sure of that
I had looked at the DEan / Winscales family of Gainfords also - but like yourself, couldn't find a definite linksorry I can't help more - if I discover any firm I'll let you know

Henry and MArtha were my 5 x g grandparents
regards
Anne
