Looking for Robert Bullen's mum of Walmer, Deal Kent
« on: Monday 29 September 08 03:18 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for verification of any parents of Robert Bullen (1771 - 16 Nov 1839 Walmer, Deal, Kent). I think his mum might be Hannah (born 1752 died 19 Oct 1837 in Walmer Kent) but I can't find verification of this in any census or certificates. I found this name in a cousin's tree but he can't remember where he found it.
Robert who was first married to Catherine Smith, they had a child Elizabeth Bullen and a son William Richard Bullen (1803 - 1886).
2nd wife Jane Meers which I have no information on.

I have looked up the JCLDS, free Bmd, free CEN and found nothing.

I remember somewhere someone said Deal or Walmer records might be missing.
So this might mean they are missing from any online resources?

Thanks for any help, Marie

Thanks, I don't think I have used that site in the past.
I hanve just emailed the Burials service at Dover to see if they can find a grave for her or family on their records.

I have just been trying to find a site that gives a rundown on what Deal records might be missing and why, but can't see one.

Is Walmer a part of Deal or is Deal a part of Walmer or are they independent towns/suburbs?
I did visit Deal 10 years ago and thought it such a lovely place.
I spent 3 days in the Deal library but didn't look for Bullens while I was there.
Thanks, Marie

Hi Elaine and Marie,

Just came across this old post of yours whilst doing some research myself. My wife is a decendant of the Bullen family in Walmer.  I am afraid it looks like you were barking up the wrong tree with the Parents of Robert Bullen. This link which I only found myself yesterday should help you

http://cashewnut.me.uk/Genealogy/JohnBullenSarahScarff.pdf

In answer to your other question, Walmer was at one time a seperate village to Deal about 1 mile down the coast towards Dover. Over the years as Deal and Walmer grew they have kind of merged into one. Mind you - I live in Walmer (not Deal) as the distinction still makes about £15000 difference to the property price!

Deal was always the bigger town and at various times they have both been under the administrative control of Sandwich and Eastry which are now all part of the Dover District.

Hope this helps, let me know if I can be of any further help

Sam

hello. I deal with enquiries regarding local studies at Deal library. the only census missing for Deal is the 1901. There are a few streets of walmer but the rest has either got lost or destroyed and there is no record of it anywhere I'm afraid.

Best Wishes

Hello, Marie

Very late I know but I have Walmer Baptism and Mariage records so had a look for Robert Bullen's birth. He is not recorded, which means that, while he may have been born in Walmer, he was baptised somewhere else - possibly the family moved.

The first mention of Bullen is 10/3/1805 William Richard Bullen born to Robert & Catherine - presumably the Robert you are trying to find.
On 3/1/1810 Isabella Bullen id born to Henry & Mary
On 3/12 1822 Robert Bullen (Widower) marries Jane Meers of Walmer

These are the only Bullens that apear up to around 1825. There is a family called Bulgen which may or may not be a mis-writing of Bullen but I think possibly not.

Sorry I can't be more help

AJ

Thank you Sam8364, yes I think you are right and I had the wrong mum name and this Cashewnut site has Robert's mum and other info that is correct. I think they did originate in Beddingham and moved down to Deal. Robert is buried there and I wrote to the cemetery and they found him in a plot on his own (surprisingly).

Thank you AJ100 he did marry Jane Mears so this is the guy. Thanks so much for your reply and info.

Deal Librarian - I feel like I know you as of the week I spent in England, 3 days I spent sitting in the Deal Library transcribing copious amounts of info from your registries. Ta so much for your reply
