Dante Road - generations of my ancestors?
« on: Saturday 27 September 08 12:58 BST (UK) »
Hi All

We've been looking through my family's tree under the name of Webb and noticing that many birth certificates relate back to one address - 40 Dante Road, Newington Butts, Lambeth...

Is there a way to search through 1901 & 1891 census on that specific address to see who lived there...? I'm not having much luck!!

thanks
Justin

Looking at the 1891 street index. try Rg12/ 366 ed 14.
Not sure if says Dante or Daute..

 Try  RG12/366  Folio 97 Page 42

I think the road has been transcribed as Daute.

It isn't street indexed on ancestry!

Hello there,

The road is definitely Dante Road, and its very near the Elephant and Castle in Southwark.
I used to live close to this area, and very nearby is what was then the Lambeth Hospital where some members of our family were born. This hospital may have been a workhouse in much earlier times and perhaps this may answer your question. There is a workhouse site that I can't think of offhand but I used it before and its very interesting with photographs too.

Hope this is of help to you.

I live round the corner from Dante Rd.  ;)

When I first moved here there were prefabs down Dante Rd.
They now have houses on one side, and the other flats built for students.

There was a hotel behind in too, The London Park Hotel, which has now been knocked down, and are building on the site at the moment.
It's next to St Mary's Churchyard, where they have just built a new park.

I would suggest you contact the Library in The Borough.

Me again,

I've just remembered that Dante Road comes under Lambeth as far as councils go, the other side of the road Newington Butts is Southwark as the boundaries meet around there.
