I think Joseph's birth is registered as Mount Street but I need to cross-check the certificate this evening. There are 2 addresses that this family are at, Mount Pleasant ad Mount Street, from 1871 census and the birth certificate.

The death dates of Elizabeth give little away, both dates point towards birth date around 1838 as per 1871 census.

Elizabeths in Preston

Elizabeth Wilcock age 36
Mar 1873 Preston 8e 421

Elizabeth Wilcock age 42
Sep 1879 Preston 8e 340

There's no John in Preston but a few others elsewhere in Lancashire. Doesn't help that their name is spelt in so many different ways! I see Christinas birth was registered as Christiana Willox.

You didn't say whether Joseph's birth was registered in Mount Pleasant?

Fairly sure Joseph's birth registered in Mount Pleasant. I can't locate Christiana's birth can you post the details and those that you have found for Matilda residing on  North Road

Re. Matilda Willettss in 1881 Preston Census, just noticed that she is residing with a family surnamed Norcross. Is it possible that there is a transcription error in 1871 census regarding mother-in-law as Ann Cross??

Where could I view the original census transcriptions?

It says mother for Ann Cross, not mother in law.

Where could I view the original census transcriptions?
The original image, you mean? Only available on pay sites I'm afraid. Get a 14 days free trial to ancestry, maybe? (You'll still have to give them your credit card details though)

I can confirm it's clearly Ann Cross

OK, so I am right in thinking that Joseph's father John takes a second partner/wife, Ann Cross, his former partner/wife was Elizabeth Cusic (or Cusick), and is the mother to all of John’s children and
her mother, and John's first Mother-in-law, is also an Elizabeth Cusic.

"Preserved Killick" suggested earlier that John and Elizabeth may not have married, and the time of the census which introduces Ann Cross she and John were also were not married. Would this not be unusual? Is Ann of English or Irish descent?

Now you've lost me! Did I misunderstand when you said you had the 1871 census details earlier? Ann Cross was shown from Ireland.

Also, why think John left Elizabeth for Ann Cross when Ann Cross is shown as John's mother on the census?  ???

Unusual not to marry - yes and no. More unusual than people who were actually married, but not at all unheard of.
