Ilchester Gaol Records
« on: Friday 26 September 08 20:53 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where I can find the inmate records for Ilchester gaol?

One of my ancestors, John Hill, was in the gaol in 1823 and I would like to know what he was in for.

Many Thanks, Paul Hill.

Hello Paul
Try the Somerset Archive Web Site http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/

On the front page the Ilchester Prison records are listed - click on the link -there is an online Surname search

Hope this helps

Hello Paul

I'm new to this site and was just wondering if you had any success in finding Ilchester Gaol Records, I too had an ancestor residing there in 1821 and would like to know more.

Thanks
John

Hi John,

Unfortunatly I was unsucessful in my search for the records of Ilchester gaol.

I wasn't able to get to the Somerset Records office so it might be worth a try.

Did anyone ever find out whether you are able to access the Ilchester Gaol records?  Or do you have to pay the 25 pounds plus for someone to have a look for you??

I also have an inmate listed on the 5/1/1834....would be interesting to find out what she was in there for?.

Regards

I visited taunton record office and had a look at the goal records - there certainly wasn'ta charge for this and the office is free to visit and it is free to look at the records.  great really that they keeo them all ;D ;D

The goal records I looked at were from 1830 and they were really good, gave a description of the prisoner.

It really is well worth the visit and all for free - not £25  ;D ;D
