Death Certificate-Leeds
« on: Friday 26 September 08 15:37 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I am trying to make sense of a possible death certificate of my G Grandfather George Storey. The certificate is dated 23/9/1939 Leeds south. Previous to this my family have had no connection with Leeds but as I am struggling to find a cert., with help from a fresh pair of eyes, this became a possibility. His second wife Mary Ann Hornsby b 1886 Leeds is the only connection I have. but, on this certificate his wife is Grace Storey, there is a marriage for a Grace Horsfield to George Storey listed in 1938 . Could this be his third wife? I am going to send for the certificate to see if anything comes up. All previous addresses have been in Lancashire.
In the meantime I would like to know if anyone has information on the addresses given, there were three!

Where died - 2 Lane End Place U.D.?

Occupation -  of? 14 Hopewell Street U.D.  General Labourer- Job fits the information I have.

Residence of Informant - Grace Storey widow of deceased- 2 Amberley Terrace Leeds.

What does U.D. mean?

Also I think maybe a companies name should have been before the of...

Where would I find, maybe Registers with the occupation address? Would there be electoral registers around. Lots of questions I know but Leeds isnt my usual stamping ground!

Any help that anyone could give would be wonderful, this side of my family has been a nightmare!

2 Lane End Place was in Holbeck Leeds, I am sure that there is a better word for it but it was like a bit of a mental home. My G Grandfather died there in 1936 I am sure that I can find where it actually was if so I will post to you

Well thank you so much for your help, that is very interesting. Am I right in thinking it would have been a workhouse before it became a "hospital"? Do you know if the building is still there and in use?

As I said in my post, this cert is a possibility for George but my last hope I think. I will check out the marriage and see what comes of it.

Many many thanks for your help

Jacqui

ps did you ever find any information on your relatives stay in the hospital?

No problem I don't think it ever became a hospital like some did. I didn't look to find anything else about it. No its not there now

As an update the death certificate was definitely my great Grandad. Does anybody know where he would have been buried? I am guessing that it was a paupers burial.
when he died he had married for a 3rd time to a GRACE VEEVERS.
