I have established that my GG Grandparents lived at Westport 149 in 1841 and 1851 (and possibly before) from census returns. I have been sent these two pictures. I was wondering could anybody date when the current building would have been erected?

Because I worked in the Grassmarket in the late 1940s, I was interested in your post and hoped that some Edinburgh person would respond. I walked the West Port many times but whether the buildings were 100 years old at that time was not something that a 16 year-old thought about. I do have a suggestion, though, which is to email a business that is there now and ask them how old their building is. I'm fairly sure they would all have been built at the same time. Here is the email for West Port Books, 145 West Port:

Hi Ian,

I have emailed Westport books and the previous owner (that is his address you gave) is the one who sent me the pictures. He thought that the modern one was built in the 1880's, but not sure of the date.

Hi There,

I worked on this corner where Bread Stret meets the West Port.  I think that they were buit in the late 1800's.  I knoe that the red building on the opposite side of the Raod was built 1883/1886.  I too am interested in the West port as my husbands family lived at 75, 77 and 133 Westport.  There was also an address on the other side of the road, which I think was 52.

Hope this helps and the next time I am up there, I will hae a look and see for you.

Regards,
Lynda
