There are a few Dawson Robinsons in the records of Seagoe Parish which is on the outskirts of Portadown. I believe that you are probably related to a line of them. It was somewhat common to call a child by the maiden name of a wife for example and then that became a regular family name. I believe my first name Watson came from this practice and has continued through the generations. I have at least 23 relations currently whose first name is Watson.

There is a Dawson and Mary Robinson of Kernan having a son William baptized April 29, 1835 at the Seagoe church.  I think this is the first child of his in the record, though Anthony and Sarah Robinson are also from there and having children earlier.

Thanks for the information, yes that is my Father!  I'm completely new to this, so what is the best way to tackle finding out more about the family?

My father said that his Mother and Father died when he was young and I know he had brothers called Joseph, Hampton and Robert and a sister called Grace, who have all passed away.

Any advice gratefully received!

Ann Marie

Talk to as many living reletaves and get as much factual information of places dates and names as you can.  Get some reasonable family tree software which will help a lot. You can make enquiries of the parish of Seagoe around which several generations of your family seems to be based from office[at]seagoe.fsnet.co.uk Another good site to locate generations of irish families is www.familysearch.org

DAWSON ROBINSON, COUNTY ARMAGH
« Reply #25 on: Sunday 06 June 10 07:05 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone.

I have just discovered this chat, and am interested in finding further information on my great great grandfather who was DAWSON ROBINSON.  I live in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, which is where he died on 30 July, 1883.

The only facts I have are as follows:

He was born in Ireland, Co Armargh, c a 1815.  His parents were Bartholomew Robinson (occupation 'farmer') and Jane Dawson.

Dawson married Mary Wilson in about 1834 in Ireland - Mary was born in Portadown, about 1812, and died in Brisbane on 1 September 1890. Her parents were Richard Wilson ('farmer') and Jane (nee Leathem).

Dawson and Mary's children were William       b c 1835 (my great grandfather)
                                                      Joseph       b c 1839
                                                      Dawson     b c 1842
                                                      Lititia         b c 1848
                                                      Martha       b c 1850
                                                      John           b c 1854
                                                      Mary           b c 1857

I am quite certain that all of the above children were born in Ireland, as Dawson and Mary arrived in Australia in 1863.  With them, came my great grandfather, William and his wife, Mary Jane nee Cairns.  I believe their first child, Wanata, was born on the journey to Australia.  I have heard family stories that Joseph and Lititia came to Australia, but have no knowledge of the other children.

William and Mary's sixth child was Mildred Wentworth Robinson who was my grandmother.

I would love to hear from someone who has more information about this part of my family tree.

Best wishes from sunny Queensland!

Traffy    :)
