Sago Armargh
« on: Thursday 25 September 08 07:38 BST (UK) »
Hello
The wedding certificate of MARY SHANKS who married William Clark in Queensland, Australia in 1883 says she was born in "Sago County Armagh Ireland" to Samuel Shanks and Jane Robinson. She was 22 years old. Therefore born about 1861.
I would like more information about this family. I tried to Google "Sago" but can not find any town or village by that name in Armagh.
Can anyone help with the geography or with birth or marriage data for these people?

I would appreciate any scrap of data that may be provided
Cheers
Greg

There's no place called 'Sago' but it's likely Seagoe. There's Seagoe Upper and Seagoe Lower. See www.thecore.com/seanruad to find details of townlands in Ireland (be sure to change setting from exact match to search for part of a word).

Thank you
This is a good lead. Can you tell me how the word would be pronounced with an Irish Accent?

'Say-go' or perhaps 'See-go'

Cheers
Greg

I wouldn't presume to tell you how to  pronunce Seagoe, but here is a wee scrap of information.  My subscription to Emerald Ancestors ran out yesterday, but they have 1 marriage for Samuel Shanks in 1857 marrying a Jane?,Co. Armagh and 1 Jane Robinson in 1857 marrying
a Samuel?,Co. Armagh.  This makes me think this is their marriage!!  Armagh Ancestors has one marriage for Samuel Shanks in 1857 which you can view for 5 euros.  Probably worth it.  Mary was born before civil registration of births, so you would have to look at church records.  I would go for the marriage record first and that will tell you the church in which they were married.RosemaryJoan

Church of Ireland website page for Diocese of Armagh:

St. Columba's and St. Mark's both in Portadown.
