scottish military records
« on: Wednesday 24 September 08 13:13 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone.
Can anybody help me? My grandfather who's name was Hugh Hepburn, was in the army for a long time ie,22years. I'm not sure of the dates but it was between 1870-1930. I don't even know what regiment, but I know he did have a chest full of medals. If anyone that has access to scottish records could look up this for me, this would help me tremendously!!! I have to add that he was a pipe major.

Thanking you in anticipation!
regards nora.

Dear Nora,

Do you know if your grandfather had a middle name? There are two WW1 campaign medal listings at the National Archives; one simply Hugh Hepburn and the other Hugh H Hepburn.

  • Hugh H Hepburn, Private, no. 11030, Royal Scots Fusiliers
  • Hugh Hepburn, Private, no. 1743, Royal Army Medical Corps

Both medal cards are available to download at a cost of £3.50.

Thank you hume 24 for your reply. I also only found those two, but the Hugh H Hepburn died in the first world war and my grandfather must have been higher than a private as he was in the army for 22/years as a pipe major, I think he must have got to at least Sargent. Also I think that he may have left the service after 1904 as that was when my dad was born, and he brought him up, not my dads biological mother. Your help is invaluable so keep trying for me.
kind regards,
nora.

Apologies, Nora, but I'm not very good at finding military records. :-[ I only know of the NA website where I have been (fairly) lucky to find some of my own relatives. Just a suggestion; why don't you try the Armed Forces board here on Rootschat? There you will find a lot more resources and people to help.

I think handy info to have is where Hugh was living when he would have joined the army (census records, etc) and a birth date/place. Even a picture of him in his army uniform may help ... could help identify a regiment, etc.

Good luck - I hope you find something! :)

Hi Nora,

I have always found this site to be particularly good at helping research WW1 queries.
www.1914-1918.net

There is a section on how to search for an ancestor in the forces and a very good forum to post questions.

Good luck,

Hi Grothenwell,

Thankyou for that, I will follow that lead, however, I think my Grandfather may have been pensioned out BEFORE the 1st.WW. I know he served in the Boar Wars, as I can remember my dad telling me that.
Thank you once again, your contribution is much appreciated!
regards Nora.
