Featherstonhaughs of Chester le Street
« on: Tuesday 23 September 08 20:39 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Marmaduke Featherstonhaugh married his first wife Ann Slayter on 13 Feb 1766 at St John, Newcastle.
He lived with both Ann, and his second wife Helen (married 1784) at Chester le Street, where all the children of both marriages were born.
I trace my descent through Mary, who was born 21 Jul 1769.

Thomas was born 8.7.1610 - son of Marmaduke Featherstonhawgh.
Isabella was born 26. 6. 1614 - son of Marmaduke Featherstonhaughe

There are several Marmadukes in the line following the Marmaduke who was married to Ann.

It's going back. (as usual) that's the problem.
Can any one tie in those born in the early 1600s with my ancestor?

Are they descended from the branch of the family who went to live at Stanhope?

ANY information would be wonderful.

Liz

Hi Liz,
My grandfather, many generations back was the brother of your Mary Featherstonhaugh. His name was William Featherstonhaugh, born 16/03/1774. I have Mary and William's father as Marmaduke Featherstonhaugh, born 1739 and he lived in Hermitage House, Chester-le-Street.

I have Thomas and Isabella Featherstonhaugh's father in my family tree, he was Marmaduke Featherstonhaugh, born in Chester-le-Street, 1577 and died in Chester-le-Street, 1632.

I have approx 100 Featherstonhaugh connections in my family tree, feel free to send me a PM if you require additional info on them.

Regards, Alison

Featherstonhaugh is one of the odd names that are not pronounced as they look.   This is pronounce Fanshaw.

Cholmondley is "Chumley"

There are lots more and sometimes are included in those forms of spellings in registers etc.,

As someone born and bred in the North, I prefer the full name of Featherstonhaugh.
As I understand it, the Featherstones or Fedderstones moved down into the valley to build their fortified tower, the original part of Feathersone Castle near Haltwhistle in Northumberland. A 'haugh' is a low lying place - hence the suffix to their name.
The branch of the family which moved to Stanhope in Co. Durham built their place on a halgh - a high place, and so became Featherstonhalghs.
This attempted tying in this name of Fanshaw is very odd. It would appear to have its 'roots' in the South. Perhaps Southerners couldn't pronounce the name!
It is, apparently, the longest name in the English language.
I, for one, will keep its authentic pronunciation and spelling.

Fred  gpod for you, but was just suggesting that others may place finformation in the other forms that are used, whether it be in the South or in the North under the variations.

OK, Dancing Master!
I appreciate that some may use other pronunciations. I wonder when and how that started.
On the family tree I am following from the mid 1700s backwards, in Durham and Northumberland, I am certain that the original pronunciation would be used.

Have been researching my own branch of the Featherstonhaugh branch for some time.  I would be very interested to find out if there is any overlap with your particular branch. How far back have you been able to get?

I Have managed to go back 8 generations in what was a very fragmented family tree. My earliest Featherstonhaugh, William (born 1715), supposedly originated "from a wealthy  Northumberland family". His mother may have been from the Shafto family.
He married a Jane Pew and settled in York.
The names George and William are the dominate male names.
Thomlinson - Dalston, Cumberland
Ashbridge - Caldbeck, Cumberland
Featherstonhaugh - Cumberland, Northumberland, Yorkshire, London & Essex.
Shafto - Northumberland, Cumberland & Yorkshire

Hi Nomad,
My paternal grandmother was Kathleen Featherstonhaugh and I have traced her ancestors back to the mid 1500's, all of them lived in and around Chester-le-Street.  I don't always have the time to research given I no longer live in the UK. However, I have relatives who have shared wonderful photographs of the generations dating back. My family have continued to share the stories that the family were first known to have settled in Featherstone Castle, (Albany Featherstonhaugh) in Northumberland, then his son, Henry Featherstonhaugh moved into Kirkoswald, Cumbria.
I'm sure there is a connection to your Featherstonhaugh roots.
Cheers, Alison
