music hall records
« on: Tuesday 23 September 08 16:09 BST (UK) »
My grandfather appeared on stage as singer/clog dancer at various venues around Smethwick, West Bromwich, Wolverhampton area during the late 19th early 20th Centuries.
That's all I know.
Does anyone have an idea how one goes about tracing details of his appearences.

Hello, I have only just started to trace my friends Family Tree and her grandfather was also Michael Walsh, who was a clog dancer, singer and comedian.  I just wondered if you had found out any other information for him.  With many thanks - Kathy.
She is Theresa Ellen Walsh's daughter who married Leslie Kavanagh.

Hi Kathy.
Michael Walsh, my Grandfather lived and died (1922 ) in Clarence Road.
His wife was Ellen who died in 1954,
If he is the same person I could give you more information but not about his Music Hall career.
I know there is a Les Kavanagh in the family but I cant place him or a Theresa Ellen in my tree.
I look forward to hearing from you again.
Mike.

Wow, that's wonderful. Maureen (my friend) who now lives in Kent.  From the information she has given me this is what I have..........
Her mother was Theresa Ellen Walsh, born 19th Nov 1907, in Aston, died 29th August 2001 at Ashford in Kent.  Theresa married Leslie A Kavanagh, born 6th August 1907, died 11th January 1989 in New Romney, Kent.  Theresa's parents were Michael Walsh and Ellen Knott.  (Theresa and Leslie were married June 1932 in West Bromwich.
Maureen also had a brother Neil.
Is this the same information that you have.
Anything you can help me with, I would be really grateful.
With kind regards, Kathy

Hi Kathy
Now I understand. I remember Maureen and Neil but I did not realise I had an Auntie Theresa - she is obviously the Nellie on the 1911 Census.
My dad  was Charles William Walsh born 14 May 1899 died 10 January 1961. I have just finished tracing his adventures in WW1.
I was born 7 March 1938 married Joan Thompson 9 March 1963.
I suppose you have traced Ellen Knott's family back to the Thornleys and Sandilands of Ashby de la Zouch. If not let me know.
However, the furthest back I can get with the Walsh line is the wedding of Michael's father, John, to Catherine Graven in Bilston in 1849.
Also, I have the newspaper record of John's death in 1860 when the roof fell on him.
The biggest question remains - whereabouts in Ireland did the family originate? Can you help?
With regard to the Music Hall. At the turn of the century Michael and his family were living in Lewisham Road  just round the corner from the Smethwick Theatre which burned down in 1929.
It could be worthwhile looking in local newspapers of that time.
Mike
