Hi Teresa
Welcome to RootsChat

A good way to start from where you are now, is to start verifying information as you work your way back. This way you can be confident that you are following the right lines.
Have you considered ordering the marriage cert for George and wife Doris in 1941? This would confirm George's age and also his father's name and occupation to let you try and find his parents' marriage and George's birth certificate.
I've checked Scotlands People (SP)
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, the official Scottish BMD site and there is one entry coming up in Alva:
George Tainsh, 1920, Alva, GROS Ref: 465/B0 0088
You would have to also order this cert. as you are outside of the period where you can view images for births on line at SP. Scottish birth certs are very informative and will include parents full names including mother's maiden name and when and where parents married. From this marriage cert for the parents, you will get full details of their parents and so on....
At the point you are at, it's a little bit like stepping stones

Once you get further back you will find it easier to find records/censuses on line for George's ancestors.
I would start first with that 1941 marriage and keep in mind that 1920 birth entry in Alva.
