Arlington Parish Records - CLOSED
« on: Sunday 21 September 08 17:48 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if the Arlington Parish Records have been transcribed, either into a book, or electronic?

I've a large number of relatives from Upper Dicker and if I have to go to the Records Office at Lewes, I'll be there for a week. If it's possible, i'd ratehr have my own copy and research at my leisure.

Many thanks,

Bob.

The early marriages (pre 1837) will be on the Sussex Marriage Index and there is some coverage on the IGI - not all of it though.  Have you looked at the Sussex Family History group site?    They have a list of CDs and books for various parishes.  You can buy the SMI from them and they have a burial index too.

Andrea,

I have seen the site, but they haven't covered Arlington yet. Looks like I'll have to settle for the SMI for now.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Hello Bob,

Yes, there is a partial transcript of the Arlington parish registers which you can buy from:  http://www.ihgs.ac.uk/index.html , but it's on microfiche.  If you go to the IHGS website click on "Library and Collections", then "Indexes & Collections", then "Sussex Collection.

The transcript covers:

Bapts 1607-1697 typed and 1699-1812 clearly written
Mars 1607-1695 typed, 1699-1753 clearly written and 1755-1837 typed
Burs 1607-1698 typed, 1700-1812 clearly written
Bishop's Transcripts 1606-1610
Index of Surnames 1606-1698
Index of Places 1606-1698
(Indexes say 1606 start, but it's actually 1607)

If you don't have a fiche reader you can always go along to your local library, or do as I did, and buy a second hand one on ebay - mine cost me £20 and a 50 mile round trip to collect, then a few months later £15 for a new bulb.  I think you can also buy small hand held viewers.

Happy hunting,

Mandy

Hi Mandy,

Thanks very much for the info. I had considered buying a fiche viewer once before. It will probably be cheaper (and greener) than travelling to Lewes for a day!

They are not cheap - unless you can find a second hand one or are lucky on ebay.  I had to get a new one recently and it cost far more than I wanted to pay!  sales@marathonmicro.com   A good service with swift delivery.
