As Pauline suggests, some more info. would be useful, esprecially your 3X grgandpa's name as this would help to find Hurst in the early years. Also, on looking at the census info I have found there seems to be some confusion between the names Hurst & Henry. If the info you have on you 3Xgrgrandpa includes his parent's names that would be important.
I think the problem wil be clear if I put the latest census I found first & then work backwards.

It looks as tho' Henry/Hurst Hilton emigrated to America sometime in the 1870s as I cannot find anything for in in the 1881 census, returning to England in the 1880s to marry.
Does any of this confirm what you know of your 3 Xgrgrandpa ? These are the onlu instances I have found for thename of Hurst.
