Morrisons of Campsie

Hello everyone,

Looking for MIs or any information on Morrisons in Campsie ... the names are:

James Morrison (c. 1793 - 1864) and Margaret Paul (d. 1861)

James' parents: William Morrison and Mary Jarvie

Any help would be appreciated. I can't seem to find further back than William!

Had a wee look at the pre-1855 MI's for Campsie Churchyard and although there's loads of Morrisons, none of them match up with the couples you're looking for. (No Jarvies at all).

Are you still interested in the Morrisons of Campsie - rephrase that - are you interested in James Morrison's wife Margaret Paul?  I have nothing further back on James Morrison (although I have a list of their children) but Margaret is my husband's gg grandaunt.

I am still interested in the Morrison family, but I'm afraid it's a distant connection. It's my uncle's great-great- ... grandparents. I can't remember how many greats off hand! I would still be happy to share any information. I have a few dates for them and parents etc.

To be honest I am not really interested in the Morrisons, it's Margaret Paul's parents who are my particular "brick wall" .  If I could find out where John Paul was born and his father's first name I would give a deep sigh and die (not too soon) a happy woman.

I'm probably missing something, but if the Morrison's are your uncle's gt gt gp's are they not by definition the same to your mother or father and hence one down the line to you?  I just know you are going to shoot me down in flames.

If you have Hume in your family name I will take the opportunity to ask if you could be related to the Hume family of Earlston & Smailholm, Roxburghshire?

Hi Lorna,

It is my uncle by marriage, so not blood related to me. However, I did take an interest in researching his family tree for my cousin and so found the Morrisons, etc.

I haven't found John Paul or Jean/Jane Martin's parents unfortunately, nor can I find their marriage either. I assume you know they moved to the Coatbridge area then into Hamilton. There isn't any death records for Hamilton around the time so no clue when they died either.

p.s. And my Humes are from the Coldingham area, eventually moving up to Dunbar.

Aha - now I am interested.     You have the Pauls in Coatbridge & Hamilton?  Could you tell me where you dug that up from please?  I have John Paul & Jean having son John in 1810 at Broomhouse Tollhouse where he was Tollkeeper.  While daugher Margaret married James Morrison and lived Lennoxtown, Agnes, my husband's gg grandmother married an Alexander Torrance and spent most of her days in Limekilns, P of Hamilton, while her brother John lived and died in Hamilton itself.  Older brother Alexander disappears.

Can you let me know about the Coatbridge/Hamilton connection for John Paul Sr please?  Makes sense since Agnes and John ended up there.  I did not find John & Jean's marriage either nor a death for either.  If there are no Hamilton records for the period that will explain it.  I have found Agnes' & husband's grave at Glassford.  Their grandson John  founded and ran (with two of his brothers) the Torrance bus company and motor hirers in Hamilton.

He married Mary (Polly) Grant a GP later in life and she attended our wedding in 1965.

Any clue about John Paul Sr. VERY welcome.

Me again Hume

I did another birth search using more wild cards and found a 5th child, Jeremiah, born to John Paul and Jean "Mairten" in Hamilton - Bingo.  I also see that John born in Broomhouse is listed in the Old Monkland/Coatbridge District.  So, I have answered my own question to you

Your observation about the loss of records over a certain period in Hamilton will account for the fact that John, Jean, Alexander & Jeremiah then drop off the map.  Great pity - but I am pleased to have that added info., so thanks for the tip.
