Dublin Whiskey Distillers Stores Ballybough
« on: Friday 19 September 08 16:21 BST (UK) »
My grandfather was in the army during the Emergency and he used to talk about being on duty at the ammunition depot in the DWD Stores (Dublin Whiskey Distillers). I think it was somewhere near the Tivoli Centre between Clonliffe Road and Richmond Avenue, Ballybough.

Does anyone have any information about the DWD Stores?

the traders section of Thoms Directory 1941 shows Dublin Whiskey Distillery Co  with distillery at Jones's Road - of course, I suppose the stores could be elsewhere?
When I looked at the addresses on Jones's Road, there was no mentionof a distillery!
the DWD is also mentioned on Richmond Road and maltings on Russell place and a bonded warehouse on Distillery Road (Clonliffe road).. about halfway along the North side of Clonliffe Rd. I'd say this might be the place??

hope this doesn't make things more confusing

Thanks for the tip aodain.

I also found out that the old P&T (before Telecom Eireann) used this place as a stores as late as the mid eighties.

Regards and thanks again.

hello futokili,
I am a garda (policeman) who works in the clonliffe / ballybough area. I am presently compiling an area profile as part of a course I am doing and I found the book "mud Island", which is an historical account of ballybough and environs. this is an axcellent book and would probably answer all your queries. From my own knowledge, the old distillery complex is situated at the end of distillery road, off clonliffe road. There is also access to it from richmond road. the river tolka runs beside it. The distilley building has been very tastefully converted to apartments and retains most of the original architecture. This is good news because had it not been developed, it would surely have collapsed into ruin. hope this helps. Also, I was a soldier in the irish army once, and whilst I was serving, the army archives in cathal brugha barracks, rathmines, went public, so they may well be able to help you.
regards,
Karl O' Neill

The Army Archive is very interesting and they were very helpful to me, when I was researching a Canadian POW in Ireland in WW2
.. invited us to come in - showed us the file including copy of telegrams etc

Hi Karl and eadaoin,

thanks for the replies guys.

Karl, thanks for the info and the excellent picture, this seems to be the place I was looking for. I am ex army myself and I was in Military Archives many times when I was stationed in Cathal Brugha barracks (2 Cav) but I am working overseas now and the guys I knew in archives years ago have gone.

eadaoin, sorry for spelling your name wrong in my last reply to you but when replying I didn't realise I could see the original post below!!

Thanks again
