German (Prussian) Immigrants
« on: Thursday 18 September 08 20:51 BST (UK) »
Hi All, Any ideas how I can trace: Charles Mende b. 1825 in Germany (Prussia), he appears in the 1861 UK Census, residing in Sheffield, working as Black Smith, obviously been there for at least 3 years as the daughter Anne was born there, however nothing shown on the 1851 Census. Anne was married to my Great Granddad. Any ideas?

Many thanks

Just some ideas- where was Charles' wife born? could they have been married in England? if so, have you looked for a record of the marriage?
Have you tried looking for Charles and family in places like LDS site (www.familysearch.org)?

His wife apparently came from Bavaria according to the 1871 Census RG10/4696

All children born in England? If so, it would be worth looking for marriage in English indexes. Have you looked on LDS site yet?

Christi(a)na Rider
Carl Mende

in the Sheffield district for the Dec quarter of 1856

Hi Andy,  Done as you suggested on the LDS site and came up with his marriage in 1849 in Prussia to Christiane Friederike Fischer. Very interesting the town is now in Poland, but how on earth did they manage to get to Sheffield?
Cheers

Colin,

You didn't mention the name of Charles' Bavarian wife?

Sorry, if I'm missing something, but how are you sure that Christiane is the right woman? Do you have Anne's birth certificate?

Unfortunately, the LDS record you found was submitted by a member, so you really have to treat it with extreme caution. Very few German records have been microfilmed by the LDS.

I'm confused also. If wife was from Bavaria how can you be certain the (submitted) Prussian marriage is the correct wife?

Andy posted a Sheffield possiblity which might also be worth considering, especially since you know the family lived in Sheffield.

The 'Prussian' bride is Christiane and the Sheffield one is Christina? so going by Christian names alone either or neither might be correct.

I'm pretty sure the Sheffield marriage must be what you're looking for.

Their daughter was born there only the next year.

And how many Carl (anglicised: Charles) Mende and Christiana couples can there be out there.

I suggest getting a copy of the marriage certificate for useful information in tracking these two further back.
