Hi Dodo50,
The Mulholland surname [and after 1892 the line was promoted to Baron Dunleath], and Ballywalter are closely connected since at least 1846 when the Mulhollands acquired the estate from the Matthews family.
However I discover information that might lead you away immediately from Ballywalter Co Down to a place called Shaneoguestown in the parish of ‘Grange of Muckamore’ Co Antrim ,read on please
Just to indicate sources on Ballywalter
if you look up
www.ballywalterpark.com/history.html# There is a tree of showing the Mulholland’s , but with the daughters just listed by quantity and not names. John Mulholland 1819-1895 had 3 sons the eldest son was b 1852 and he had 3 daughters, one of whom might be your Elizabeth or say a cousin . A library copy of Burkes Peerage would help you best. Burkes is also available for fee payment on line for 24 hours.
A Mulholland family tree exists in the Blackwood Family history manuscript trees in the LinenHall library, Belfast. I suggest you ask them for photocopying estimates if they think your knowledge relevant and you should be prepared to pay a fee for copying, post and packing, and perhaps some staff time and overheads.. Mulholland vol 5 p2 (Lord Dunleath’s family name)
However in my unsucessful pursuits to find Lizzies birth at Ballywalter, I came across something that has too many coincidences to ignore
from
www.ancestryireland.com Eliza Mulholland Birth: 26 JUL 1853 Of Shanguestown, {Jim adds see current spelling below} Antrim, Ireland
Parents:
Father: Hugh Mulholland Mother: Mary Thompson
from
www.proni.gov.uk/index/local_history/geographical_index/townlands.htmThe spelling of this townland should be Shaneoguestown
Shaneoguestown
from Griffiths valuation
www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/antrim/grangeofmuckamore.htmthis survey is dated about 1861-5 ie he is living there then
Mulholland Hugh Shaneoguestown Grange of Muckamore Antrim
Mulholland Patrick Ballyharvey Upper Grange of Muckamore Antrim
so is this the right Hugh anyway, and did Hugh move to work on the 1000 acres of the Ballywalter estate before his daughter went to England
At the NIPRO are the Mulholland papers ie
http://www.proni.gov.uk/index_alphabetical_index_to_private_deposits.pdfin amongst taht might be records of the estate managers etc.
From this year 2008
www.planningni.gov.uk/Devel_Control/council_schedules/antrim/Antrim_S240408.pdf which currently shows a Mr Mulholland made a proposal for a change to an Agricultural building ie T/2007/0191/F at 87 Oldstone Road, Muckamore Ballymena, BT41 4SP , This could be a relative.
So thats a curious starting reply for you, I hope my later part is not a red herring, lets hope more chatters will join in
Regards Jim
