I found two entries for Ed/Edward Bunton on FindMyPast.  The first one was for the Pretorian which departed Glasgow on 5 July 1921 for Montreal.  The entry is for Edward Bunton of 42 College Street, Maxwelltown, Dumfries; age 33; Farm Lab.; landing at Montreal - but his name is crossed off the list.

The second record is for the Melita which left Liverpool on 12 July 1921 also headed for Montreal.  He is listed with a group of other passengers under the heading British Government Passengers (I'm not sure if this means it was an assisted passage).  He is listed as Ed Bunton, again of 42 College Street, Dumfries, age 33, Farm Hand.  The destination is only listed as Canada, no specific province or city.

So it looks like he was booked on the Pretorian but for some reason sailed a week later on the Melita.  There are a few records in the Drouin Collection on ancestry for Edward Bunton, Edward Miller Bunton, Albert Edward Bunton....I don't have a sub so I can't tell if these fit with the birthdate you provided.  But perhaps someone else with a sub can do a lookup.

Looking at your photo, I can tell you he definitely did not emigrate to British Columbia!  We don't get that much snow - only sun, sun, sun.  Okay and a bit of rain now and then.   ;D

Hope this helps,
Lynwen

I am glad the shipping records were a match.  I was hoping that we could find some additional records on Edward to confirm where he settled in Canada.  The port of entry was not always the intended point of settlement so he could have moved on from Quebec to Ontario, Manitoba or the Prairies or even east to the Maritimes.  All of the Canadian records are organized by province so you really need to know where he settled in order to track down any additional records.  The other complicating factor is that privacy laws in Canada limit the amount of information you can access - since he arrived after the last published census in 1911, our only hope is to find a death record, cemetery record or obituary notice.

Are you looking for more information on Edward's life in Canada or were you just hoping to confirm his emigration date?  Just wondering if we should continue the search or mark this as completed.

Hi Lynwen

Im trying to find as much as is possiable about Edward I have just discovered that His brother Francis lived at 145 Richmond Street West Toronto in 1917 I have just found that on his papers for the 255th Battalion Canadian Army and it has Edward as his next of kin address for his parents at Muirkirk Ayrshire where Francis was born so its possible that Edward was Joining his brother over there and I think Toronto gets heavy snow in winter as the picture I have of my own Mother and Father when they stayed over there is in winter time and the snow is deep

I searched on Ancestry.ca for Edward Bunton, born 1888 - but I selected the option to only view records from Canada.  This filters all the UK Census and BMD records and makes it easier to spot the Canadians.  I think Helena listed most of the records I found but if you find more, you can request another lookup from someone with a sub for the Canadian records (I don't think they are included with the UK sub).
