Just caught up with this. There are a lot of "Canal Sides" in the area and at least two in Oldbury. The one in the photo taken from the air, next to Toys 'r Us, on the Portway branch of the Titford Canal, is too far outside the town, I grew up very near it in Whiteheath. The two most likely Canal Sides are the one near the Whimsey Bridge, Oldbury, next to the Mecca bingo hall (I think) where the road from Blackheath crosses the canal, and the other is near Bromford Lane, where the road to West Bromwich crosses the now filled-in Oldbury Loop Canal. There was a Canal Side parallel to the present Simpson Street, near the centre of the town, on that Loop Canal. There are photos in some of the books on the area eg. Paul Collins' Black Country Canals.

Hi Bellou, do you have a Daniel Holloway in your tree?  I found details of a coaldealer called Daniel Holloway who in about 1840 built himself a house in Halford's Lane which in about 1860 became the pub "The Old House at Home"  In 1855 he also built 8 cottages on adjoining land.

Here's the link, a lot of text here, type Holloway as search on page to find it

Julie

I have just seen your post. I don't think I have a Daniel Holloway in my tree , but do have coal! They may have been related somewhere . I seem to have a lot of James and Johns .

Regards

Bellou

I was reading this and i tend to agree with Den.
Canalside was on the Whimsey Bridge.Holloways had a Boat Builders and possibly also  a coal wharf there in the 50's.

Many thanks, Bobbie Jo. I was at a meeting of the Oldbury Local History Group today and asked Terry Daniels, the Oldbury expert, about it. He said there could have been as many as five or six blocks of buildings called Canalside in 19th c. Oldbury. The most likely area associated with Holloway's coal wharf was off Church Street / Bromford Lane on the old Oldbury Loop Canal, now filled in. The other possibility is, as I suggested, along from the Whimsey Bridge. Various older people in the audience said it depended which generation of Holloways we were talking about - they may have moved about!
