Just caught up with this. There are a lot of "Canal Sides" in the area and at least two in Oldbury. The one in the photo taken from the air, next to Toys 'r Us, on the Portway branch of the Titford Canal, is too far outside the town, I grew up very near it in Whiteheath. The two most likely Canal Sides are the one near the Whimsey Bridge, Oldbury, next to the Mecca bingo hall (I think) where the road from Blackheath crosses the canal, and the other is near Bromford Lane, where the road to West Bromwich crosses the now filled-in Oldbury Loop Canal. There was a Canal Side parallel to the present Simpson Street, near the centre of the town, on that Loop Canal. There are photos in some of the books on the area eg.
