Surrey Burial/Will HANDFORD near Hampton Wick
« on: Tuesday 16 September 08 03:56 BST (UK) »
Hannah HANDFORD died according to a newspaper report [The Morning Chronicle (London, England), Saturday, January 2, 1858; Issue 28403] on 24 Dec 1858 at Hampton Wick.
She was the widow of George HANDFORD of Greenwich [Kent] and Banstead. George is buried at Walton on the Hill

I have been unable to locate a death registration and wondered if sks might find a record of her burial or a will .
Which district office in Surrey would I apply for a death certificate if I can't find one at the GRO?
I'm Australian and a bit lost in Surrey :)

Hi,

The dates do not tie up.........newspaper 2 January 1858 reporting a death almost 12 months later!  ???

FreeBMD has this possible death from 1857:

Hannah Handford   DecQ 1857  Kingston   2a   118

If this is indeed the registration of her death, Hannah does not appear to have been buried in Surrey.

Hampton Wick is actually on the Middlesex bank of the river.

 Many thanks to you both!
My mistake...death of course was Dec 1857...I am a silly sod:)
I have been looking for ages and now just had a gander and now Free BDM up to 99% for that quarter ...92% a few days ago ...so it certainly pays to keep going back!

Wonder where on earth she was buried?

Would her maiden name be likely to be mentioned on her certificate ?

No, the maiden name on a death certificate is a recent addition.

As to burial; start with the nearest church to her home.

Thanks Nanny Jan...I thought as much.

I haven't been able to find her in 1851 [she was in High St,  Carshalton  in '41].

I fact a dau, also Hannah (unmarried b 1810)  and son Charles [business in High Holborn] and half his family are missing too. Possibly incorrectly transcribed somewhere but my guess is a jaunt to the continent. Charles left 2 children home with servants.

thanks again
Judy
