Pete -
Thanks for suggestion.  Atcham is definitely given as the place where my gt gt grandad's death was registered, and (looking at the map) it's on the opposite side of Shrewsbury to Shelton Hosp.  I suppose anyone dying in the Shelton area wd have their death recorded in the approp district, & Atcham seems a long way out.   I've re-checked the 1881 Census & see that  he was then recorded as living in Coton Hill/Oak Yard (Castle Without ward of Shrewsbury), so am still rather puzzled by the Atcham registration, wherever he died.
Best wishes
Peter

Hi Pete.

Your ancestors death would have been registered in the Atcham district, What puzzles a lot of people is the fact that Atcham itself is a small village no more then a few houses, yet the Atcham district covers a large part of the county including Shrewsbury, It is no  wonder that our oversea cousins cant get there head around our archiac systems :) :)

 Best wishes

Pete

P.S belive me I was born Shrewsbury although I am registered in Atcham dist according to my birth cert

Thanks, Pete - that's very helpful.  I've come across this kind of thing before.  It's probably something to do with how districts were administered in the days when registration was first set up, & it's never been changed - historically interesting, but frustrating for present-day research!
When researching my late wife's family, all of whom lived in the Clayton/Great Horton part of Bradford, I found all BMDs were recorded as "North Bierley".  This puzzled me, as I'd never heard of it when I lived in Bradford for 3 years. So I looked at an OS map.  There's no such place as North Bierley!  There IS a Bierley and an East Bierley - neither of which are anywhere near Clayton & Gt Horton!   It's just a minor suburb, but is (or was) important to the registrars!

I believe that the original registration districts corresponded with the Poor Law administrative areas.
