Thomas White
« on: Monday 15 September 08 00:55 BST (UK) »
I know this is a long shot!.  ???

But I am actually stuck on my White line..
Is there anyone with access to the archives that would be able to help me please.

I have a Thomas White... who married in Durham.. in Nov 1851

Listed as being 28 a bachelor.. and his father being listed as Thomas White a Lead Miner.

makes him born about 1823/24

from the marriage on living in Durham
1861 living at Brancepeth Colliery
Thomas White aged 38 born Lampla, Cumberland

1871 living at Coxhoe
aged 46, born ??

1881 living at Ryman Street, Wingate
aged 57 born Whitehaven

1891 living at Tudhoe, Spennymoor with his married dau
aged 67 born Lampley, Cumberland.

he dies in 1899 aged 75 years from Natural Decay

I would love to be able to track his family further back.. Find out who his mother was etc..

Find him in 1851 or even 1841 Censii... would be a start.. but I have looked and looked but so far cannot find him in either census..

There's nothing that jumps out on the IGI... for a baptism for him.. either...
so taking a guess the place where he was born must not covered by the IGI

I have no mother's name to go on... and just the details from the marriage cert.... giving his father as Thomas..

Any super Sleuths out there... that could help

I live in Durham.. but dont drive which makes it difficult to get across to Cumbria

Anyone like a challenge?

Hi Mo

Lampla and Lampley will be corruptions of Lamplugh, the pronunciation of which rhymes with "sampler" rather than "shampoo".  It's about 8 miles from Whitehaven.

The 1861 census says born Alston Moor - which is nowhere near Lamplugh.

Maps
Alston Moor http://tinyurl.com/5hhmgk
Lamplugh http://tinyurl.com/5mftk6

Look at virtually any 1861 (or earlier) census page for Alston and you will see a lead miner.  In Lamplugh it's mainly AgLabs.  No lead mining there.

This suggests to me that the family migrated at some point.

No WHITEs bap at Lamplugh in 1820s.  Several at Alston but no father called Thomas.
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Hi Geoff

Thankyou

There is a Thomas White bapt 5th September 1819 at Alston, Cumberland and son of Thomas and Ann

a son Joseph bapt the same day to same parents..

Thomas has children
John
Joseph
Thomas
Rachel
William
Naomi
Benjamin
Mary Ann

His wife Mary Ann's parents were Benjamin and Rachel
and she had brother Joseph and sister Naomi

Ben, Rachel and Joseph all died in the Cholera Epidemic.... Naomi looked after all the orphaned kids

They dont seem to have used the trad naming pattern either.. which doesnt help

Hi,

I'm new to RootsChat so apols if this should be on another thread.

I'm researching my family tree and stuck at Robert Heslop b 1715 Marwood Barnard Castle. Grateful for advice - not sure whether to start at Durham Records or St Marys Church In Barny. Many thanks,
