Lynn - I can remember Harraton Colliery being called 'Cotia  Pit or Colliery'.  The word 'Cotia' was derived rom 'Nova Scotia'. '

Lynn - the Durham Mining Museum website is an excellent website and I use it a lot, however my posting was in relation to my own knowledge of the use of the name 'Cotia Pit'.

Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and do a search on the post code NE389DB which will centre the map on Nova Scotia, Harraton, which is on the 1951-1959 map. You may have to zoom out a bit  :)
