St Marys Walton on The Hill, Liverpool
« on: Saturday 13 September 08 21:38 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone that could try and find a gravestone for me in St Marys,Walton on The Hill. It is for a Mary Bingham who was buried on 23/02/1891, per the church records she was buried in row 4 but it does not state an area.
If anyone can help it would be most appreciated.
Thank you
Shelly

St Mary's Walton on the Hill used to have a family History group.

But wirting to the Verger at the Church would perhaps help.

I don't know if the graveyard was affected when the Church was bombed

Hello Shelly

I was able to visit the church last week on a family visit to Liverpool (I live in Brighton now) as we too have just discovered our ancestor William Japha is buried in the graveyard  (in 1891 conincidently), and like you, we have a plot number.
However, it looks like none of the stones are in situ (apart from the few large memorial structures) and everything looks to have been moved about following a bombing in WW2 and renovation. The stones are now flat, lined up next to each other in rows, and in no particular order (or so it looks). Many are covered by earth or eroded.

I haven't been able to find an original map that would allow us both to see the vicinity of the original placement and have asked/emailed the verger as suggested but with no response yet.

My brother has visited several times trying to see someone at the church but is is always closed when he goes. I have this week found out there is a 'Friends of St.Marys graveyard' who have been cleaning up the area (and have done a brilliant job as my brother said there is a vast improvement since he first visited late last year) and I will be contacting them to see if they can help us. there some excellent sources provided in another link that I've just started on the church (In 'General Queries'
).

Good luck

Denis

I am a parishioner of this church, if you contact the rector I am sure he will be able to help as he is very keen on the history of the church and local area. The website for the church is www.WaltonTeamMinistry.com where you will find his email and contact details. Hope this helps.

Hello Dennis and others
In Liverpool Record Office under (RO films) there is a film of the Monumental Inscriptions for the above.  It is rather a large film, and you will have to trawl through it.  It is'nt indexed, but very readable.  I would think the M.I's would have been listed early 1900's
The Record Office is now in a room in the Museum building 2nd floor for the time being until the original building now being refurbished will be open c2012/13
Good Luck
Joan
