German Ancestry help required PLEASE!!!
« on: Friday 12 September 08 13:20 BST (UK) »
Im tearing my hair out here. I have posted a while ago but i haven't got anywhere unfortunately.

I am trying to research family members of Waldemar Anton August Vogeley born 11 Sep 1902 Rendsburg Schlesswig-Holstein. Died 19 Jan 1994 Itzehoe Germany. This is my husband's grandfather. I believe the name was Vogelei to begin with and it was changed. I don't know if this was because he was a socialist or a communist and was taken to the concentration camps by the Nazi's. Maybe he decided to change it after that. He was married to KAthe Schultz and had a daughter Herta Minna. I would like to find her brothers if possible and also Waldemar's parents names. There were at least three brothers. One was Archie (don't know how that would have been spelt over there), one was Artur and the other i have no idea of his name. One committed suicide and another died in a motor vehicle accident. I believe Archie was the surviving one.
He has a daughter called Angelica.
I have searched on ancestry and all i get is those who went off to the states which is not this family.

There was also one piece of info on the internet about Waldemar being a socialist. Apart from that i have nothing to go on and haven't had any luck contacting organisations in Itzehoe either.

I think this line is going to be given up on my searching soon as not being able to speak german is definitely holding me back.
I would appreciate any help anyone could give me.

Hope i have posted this in the correct place.

Thanks

Sally

What about a letter to the local newspaper (without mentioning the political bits as such things can still be quite sensitive)?
If Itzhoe is a fairly small place a letter (in German) to Vogeley family might produce some results. (I was able to find German relatives of my grandmother's that way)
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Did you try in german  ?  :)

itzehoe zeitung brings up several, including

http://www.steinburg.city-map.de/city/db/021401100000/Itzehoe/1/729/Zeitungen.html

with three addresses.  Write in english, and if that doesn't work, let us know and somebody here will translate for you.

good luck,
Bob

Hello Sally,

Firstly Vogeley to Vogelei is not really a name change. Many words in modern German that end in 'ei' used to be spellt 'ey', e.g. bey/bei, sey/sei.

They are phonetically identical.

Your husband is entitled under German Law to obtain a copy of his grandfather's birth certificate from the relevant Standesamt (Registry office). He should write to:

Standesamt Rendsburg
Neues Rathaus
Am Gymnasium 4
24768 Rendsburg

email address: standesamt [at] rendsburg.de

He will be asked to prove his direct relationship to Waldemar.

Unfortunately, German law limits access to vital records after c1873 to direct decendents. This means your husband is NOT entitled to receive any information regarding Waldemar's siblings, or any children other than your husband's father/mother. Very frustrating!

Hope this helps,

Justin

Hello Sally

"There was also one piece of info on the internet about Waldemar being a socialist."
Where on the internet have you found this info and what says it exactly?

"I haven't had any luck contacting organisations in Itzehoe either."
Which organisations / archives have you tried to contact in Itzehoe?

"Firstly Vogeley to Vogelei is not really a name change. Many words in
modern German that end in 'ei' used to be spellt 'ey', e.g. bey/bei, sey/sei.
They are phonetically identical."

Vogeley in German and Vogelei in German are phonetically identical.
Vogeley in Englisch and Vogeli in German are phonetically identical.
There are also the names Vögeli, Voegeli, Vögelin, Voegelin, Vögelein.

Kind regards
Svenja
