Hi Nige,

There are a few possibilities, I'm afraid!  :-\

Actually, in a booklet covering baptisms in Slaithwaite for the years 1761 to 1789, there are no less than 9 William Quarmbys! However, these are the ones that fall between 1775 to 1780:-

13.1.1776 s/o George  abode: Holt, Lingards
5.1.1778 s/o William  abode: Holehouse, Linthwaite
21.10.1775 s/o William  abode: Binns, Linthwaite.

I'm not sure if that'll help or hinder! Feel free to come back to me if you come up with any more clues.

Jill

Jill,

Thanks a lot that's great.

William of Holehouse is mine, the family lived there for the next 100years or so.
From 1805ish the family had children christened at Linthwaite Methodist, so I was looking at the Huddersfield/Almondbury records.
It's taken more than 10 years to find this out, so I'm really pleased.

William was married to `Betty' c1800 but I've never found the marriage. Do you have the records for marriages, if so I would be most grateful if you could help.

Thanks again.

Nige :) :)

I don't have any Slaithwaite marriage records, I'm afraid.  :(

I checked Almondbury but the only 2 William Quarmby marrying a Betty records I could find are probably too early and too late respectively -

7.2.1796 William Quarmby & Elizabeth Baxter botp  banns

10.8.1812 William Quarmby & Betty Witwam botp  banns.

Jill,

Thanks for your efforts, it's very much appreciated.

I've been checking on the IGI and can't find any records for the christening of William or his possible marriage (1796).

What is different between your records and the IGI. I'm just being inquisitive really.

Thanks again,

Nige :)

The IGI doesn't have full coverage of all parishes, so it's really a matter of luck if they have the parish you're interested in. Having said that, their coverage is by far the best online - and free!

The records I have were bought from the Huddersfield and District FHS. The FHS have transcribed these from the originals so should be complete .

If you have lots of ancestors from this neck of the woods, it may be worth your while investing in some of their booklets/CDs. I've built mine up over a few years now but there are still gaps in my collection.

If you haven't already visited their website, it's

www.hdfhs.org.uk

Once you're there, hover your cursor over 'Publication' , and then 'Society Publications' and click on 'What We Have'.

Another hint, once you've located a parish record and, again if you haven't already done so, is to request copies of the actual entry in the parish records. You need to contact the West Yorkshire Archive Service

www.archives.wyjs.org.uk

The charges are very reasonable. Sometimes the copies don't tell you anything more but often - especially with marriages - you can find out a little bit more (e.g. names of witnesses) which will help you trace earlier generations.

Sorry if I'm telling my granny how to suck eggs!!  ;)

Jill,

Thanks for clearing up a few things for me regarding the IGI.

I didnt know that you were able to request copies of the actual record from west yorks archive service.

I will pay a visit to the HDFHS website.

Any help I get is always gratefully received, there is always something to learn in family history.

Thanks again.

Nigel :)

I checked Kirkburton and St Peter's to make sure they didn't nip over there to get married but nothing showing up for that time period.

Thank you brer for checking the Kirkburton and St. Peters marriages for me.
The William Quarmby/Elizabeth Baxter looks to be the best bet so far.
