William & Alice MORRIS/Morice of Trefriw, 1841
« on: Thursday 11 September 08 00:46 BST (UK) »
Hello.  I have just found my ancestors listed in the 1841 census in Trefriw:

William Morice (Morris), age 70
Alice, age 65

Their home is Cynllwyd.

I realize that I will now have to research through archives but I need help knowing where to look and also to make sure I know which district, parish, etc. I research in.  Also, which churches, graveyards, etc?

Thanks so much in advance.

Hi Hollister & welcome to Rootschat :)

This link should help you get started

The Gwynedd FHS has some parish register transcriptions and MI information.

Have you found them in 1851?

Free BMD has these possible deaths:

Alice MORRIS Jun Q 1846, Llanrwst, vol 27, 140
William MORRIS Mar Q 1849, Llanrwst, vol 27, 185

No ages back then.  It's a good idea to try to find the burials anyway to confirm if possible.  Do you know what religion?

You could also try a message on the CAE or Gwynedd list on rootsweb.

I tried to find Cynllwyd today but it doesn't seem to be there.  On the 1841 census route it was roughly between Gelli Lydan and Cae'r Gwair.  Found both of those on Old Maps at coordinates 276600 and 363100.  The modern grid reference on OS is SH765 628 and this is a link to an overhead view of the area.  Gelli Lydan is still a current name but Cae'r Gwair doesn't appear.

Heather - thanks so much for all of this information.  I will have to take a look at all of this.  I think the deaths you found in the BMD are them as I don't see them in 1851.  Also, I'm not sure of their religion.
Thanks so much again.  I'll start by looking for burials.

Hi
I'll pop into the churchyard in Trefriw and see if I can find them (there aren't that many graves!).
They could have been buried at Llanrychwyn or, if they were Methodists, they could have been buried by the chapel at Ardda, if so the headstones might be in the cemetery. Will see what I can find (if it's not raining!)

Not good news I'm afraid.
I couldn't find them in the churchyard, but there were a few headstones that I couldn't read. Their headstones aren't in the cemetery either.
We (the WI) did a survey of the gravestones in the churchyard, the cemetery and Llanrychwyn in the 1980s and I'm sure the results were sent to the archives in Caernarfon, so you might try there.
I had a look at the 1841 census and as far as I can tell, Cynllwyd is/was on the Crafnant road, near Cwmanog,a farm that is still there.
Good hunting. I'll let you know if I find out anything else.
