do you have any clue as to which part of ireland they came from?

the surname Long was apparently very common in ireland, widely

spread throughout the country, around the time of the decade you

mentioned. any clue at all would help narrow it down.

As Tony says Long is a surname found all over Ireland. To search for information in Ireland you really need to know where they lived in Ireland (parish if not actual townland not just the county or 'Ireland').
Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages began 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages) so you need to check for church records (if they exist) once you have a location.
Have you checked all English census records for the whole family (up until 1901) to see if there's at least the county of birth listed?

My father has an idea that Tipperrary was mentioned when he was younger.
I have looked all through the census's and everyone just says Ireland, so no help from them.  Will just have to keep searching and hoping.  I know the family were originally Catholic.

We have CoI / Presbyterian Longs from Donegal/Londonderry.  Anyone researching that area?

Not that I know of. 

The family came originally from Muff where they were farmers.  William and Jean (children of William) were my f-i-l's cousins.  William died in about 1955.  He lived in Culmore and was an engineer in the shirt factories in Derry.  Jean's married name was Graham and she lived in Belfast and died aged 90+ in the 1990s.
