Birth certificate with no name...
« on: Monday 08 September 08 23:20 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have a birth certificate of who I think it is my ancestor but I don't know, because the date matches, the father's name could match but it's not enough.

Here what's on the birth cert. (I've also attached the cert. incase that could help) :

Robert Udny in Ochterellon, had a son baptized called ??? (nothing! just an empty blank, just as if the minister had left it in purpose, so that we would complete it after...), witnesses William Shenson on ??? (can't read it...), William Pirrie at the Milne.

He was born on October 17th, 1703, in Ellon, Aberdeenshire.

Thanks for your help.

Nick.

Hi Nick,

Firstly, could you remove the full image - breech of copyright and RC rules.

Suggest you replace it with a cropped portion of the relevant part of the document, quoting the GROS reference.

Secondly, if this is the best you can get from SP, it might be worth asking someone, even SP, for a better copy.

If you zoom in it does look as if there is a name mentioned.

Starting with an 'M' ending in a 'D'

Just enlarged the relevant piece - are you looking at the 'called' Sancti - after it there is just a space.

All the other 'calleds' on the page are like this.

I have a couple of these and they match the ages of children subsequently found in censuses.

Poor wee laddie  ;D

His parents might not have decided or the minister/clerk forgot the name.

The only other time I've come across it is when a child was stillborn or died soon after birth - but this one had two witnesses  :-\

Thanks,

so this Udny would be stillborn or died soon after birth ?

My ancestor was James Udny married in 1727, and I've only find that Udny born in 1703 that could be him.
And when looking at the Scottish naming Convention, the first son should have the name of his paternal grandfather, and the first son of James is Robert! And they seem to have follow that convention naming system, when I look at the other children.

Also James got married in Ellon, and Robert was from Auchterellon which are two places just near each other.

Don't know if all this is a coincidence but considering the fact that I can't find any other James Udny that could fit him in his age when he married, I think that it is him...

Let me know what do you think.

Nick.

Hi Nick

I think I said it could be because of a few reasons

still birth or very early death
parents not decided on a name
minister/clerk forgotten the name

If your ancestor was of a very similar age in other documents, then it's very possibly him but, without the name in the record, it is impossible to be 100% sure.
