Lowestoft Area Baptisms – KENT & BROWN (Updated)
« on: Monday 08 September 08 16:17 BST (UK) »
Many thanks to all who replied to my original thread - http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,325204.0.html

I’ve started this new thread to summarise what has been discovered so far, and to prevent the original one from getting too unwieldy.

I am looking for the baptism records of:-

John William Frank KENT, b 1864/65, Father’s name: John KENT, a Sailor.
Emma BROWN, b 1866/67, Father’s name: Fredrick BROWN, a Traveller.

They were both, supposedly, born in Lowestoft, so the following registers/parishes have been checked; unfortunately drawing a blank:-

Lowestoft St John’s
Lowestoft St Margaret’s
Kessingland
Pakefield
Kirkley
Oulton

The following have yet to be checked:-

Lowestoft St Peter’s
Lowestoft Christ Church
Gunton
Carlton Colville

If anybody could please check the outstanding registers, I’d be eternally grateful.

Thanks in advance,

Dean.

Hi Dean

I've been back to the RO today and tried once more to find John Kent and Emma Brown but they are so elusive!!

They were not baptised at either Gunton or Carlton Colville.  I checked with the research assistant and she tells me that Lowestoft St Peter's was a chapel of ease and no baptisms were performed there (the ones in this parish would have been done at St Margarets).  Also the records for baptisms at Christchurch start in 1867 - I questioned whether there were any prior to this date, and she told me that the church came into being in 1867, so no baptisms before this date.

I also double checked St John's (but they still weren't there  ;D)

I was able to find the baptisms of their two children though, both baptised at St Peter's, Kirkley.

Frank Henry Frederick
s/o Frank William and Emma Kent
born 5th September, baptised 29th October 1893
Father = a labourer

Kathleen Olive Kate
d/o Francis William and Emma Kent
born 18th November, baptised 8th December 1895
Father = a labourer

I know there are discrepancies here compared to your tree, but this is as stated in the transcript.

Best wishes
Anne

Hi Anne,

Thank you so much for checking the registers.  I wasn’t too sure about St Peter’s & Christchurch – Lowestoft RO suggested checking them!... in an e-mail I received from them last year. Now Gunton & Carlton Colville have drawn blanks, I really do seem to have hit a brick wall  :(.  I can only now think that they were born elsewhere, moved to Lowestoft at a young age, and maybe didn’t know any better.  It’s strange that I’m having the same problem with two families though – it’s almost as though a batch of Lowestoft records has gone missing!

It’s interesting to see John was calling himself Frank William and Francis William on their first 2 children’s baptism records.  He calls himself Frank Kent on the 1901 census, but on all 5 of their children’s birth certs, and his marriage cert, he’s John William Frank Kent – at least that gives me another combination to search for on the census returns; although I won’t hold my breath!

Many thanks again Anne, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Dean.
