McGrath
« on: Saturday 06 September 08 00:13 BST (UK) »
My grandmother who died at the age of 38 (when my mother was 12-13 y.o.) according to her death certificate she died at the Thurles County Home on August 1, 1942. She died of Blood Poisoning. I think after the birth of a child, because my mother remembers her being pregnant. I also have her marriage certificate to Thomas Shanahan on February 13, 1925 in Tipperary Town. It states her fathers name was John McGrath and that she was from Tipperary (I assume they mean Tipperary Town). My grandfather was residing in Templemore at the time of the marriage,  he was a soldier, although all of his family is from Roscrea. I have his birth certificate. Alll of the children (6 in all) were sent to different area  orphanages/schools  prior to my grandmothers death until they became of age. I am trying to find where exactly Catherine McGrath was born and both of her parents names, so that I can further my research for my motheres 80th birthday which is in December. I am going to Ireland next month for a visit with relatives and also to do major research so that I can present it to my mother. I have located relatives McGrath that are in the Cahir area, just waiting for them to call me back.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

If your mother was born 1928 then she was about 14 when her mother died. Your grandmother, hopefully with her family, should be listed in 1911 census- and if the mother was in the household it would get you a Christian name for her.
1911 census will eventually be online but not sure if 1911 census for Co. Tipperary is available now (pay or subscription site perhaps) but have a look at the links for Co. Tipperary sources here (at top of Tipperary board) and see if there's anything listed.
