FORSTERs and COWEN/COWANs
« on: Friday 05 September 08 16:33 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am searching for any information on an Elizabeth FORSTER (perhaps FORRESTER) and John COWEN (or COWAN) who were married 30 Mar 1811 in Nichol Forest, Cumberland.  I believe they are my GGG Grandparents who emigrated to Les Cedres, Quebec, Canada (near Montreal).

I'd love to hear from anyone researching these names and any suggestions (webpages, archives, etc.) on how I may continue my research would be most appreciated.

Many thanks!
Diane

Hi Diane

Welcome to Rootschat :)

Sorry, I can't help ... my COWANs (who became COANs) were still in Ireland at that time.
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Hi and welcome
Any idea when they went out to Canada?   Names and dates of their children?  When did they die and at what age?  Nichol Forest is right against the border with Scotland so it may be worth looking there too.

I believe they may have come to Canada in the early 1800s and the only child I'm aware of is my GG Grandmother Agnes Forster COWAN, born 4 Mar 1826 in Les Cdres, Quebec, who married Thomas BICKERDIKE in 1842.  Unfortunately I have no other information on John COWAN and Elizabeth FORSTER.

Have you searched the parish register for Nichol Forest?  You can get the films to search at LDS centres which are worldwide.  I would think that should be the first step to see if they had children in England - or indeed if they died here.  A birth in 1826 is a long time after the marriage so there is a strong possibility that there were other children before that if you have the right couple.   How do you know about the Cumberland connection?

Thanks Andrea...

I first came across a mention of this webpage - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rutledge/DodgsonManuscript.htm - on a Message Board.  There was mention of a John COWEN and Elizabeth FORSTER marriage (in Cumberland) and details of their emigrating to Canada.  The 'Ceeders' mentioned on the website is actually 'Les Cedres' which I knew is where my ancestors lived.  The website also mentions a Joseph FORSTER (Elizabeth's brother) who emigrated and died in Quebec.  I was able to find his death record and one of the witnesses was Elizabeth COWEN!  So I'm feeling comfortble now that I am on the right track.

Cheers, Diane
