Samuel KING b 1892 High Halstow KENT died AUSTRALIA?
« on: Friday 05 September 08 01:46 BST (UK) »
Am looking for info on a Samuel KING who left ENGLAND in the early 1900's and went to join an older brother Charles Gabriel KING in Manitoba. Some time after his brother died (1918) I believe he went to AUSTRALIA where he may have changed his surname (GRASBY HAMPSON SCRIVENER KEMPSTER?) I would love to know what happened to Samuel and if he had a family in Australia. I have a lot of interesting info to exchange. Thank you.

Samuel KING (Sam junior) was born 23 May 1892 in High Halstow, Kent, ENGLAND son of Samuel KING and Mary Ann  KING (NEE SCRIVENER). Mary Ann was called Polly by her husband.

Samuel KING (Sam senior) was married (to Mary Ann SCRIVENER) using the surname GRASBY but his birth was registered under the surname HAMPSON (because his father had changed his name from Thomas GRASSBY to Henry HAMPSON).

Family rumour has it that someone deserted the army and Sam junior seems a likely candidate, so he may well have felt that he needed to change his surname to cover up his tracks..

He may have used his mother's maiden name, SCRIVENER, or his grandmother's maiden name, KEMPSTER, or reverted to his birth name, HAMPSON, or reverted to his father's birth name, GRASSBY.

I would like to sort this mystery out as my grandmother (Sam's sister) didn't really know what happened to her brother and now never will and that thought makes me sad. He deserves to be found and his details added to those of his other 10 siblings.

hi Family rumour is incorrect.  Both Sam and Charles went into the Canadian army.  Charles sadly dies of pneumonia on 30/4/18 and Samuel died 3/1/1929, just a few days before he was due to be discharged.
Why there were name changes in the family I have no idea and makes researching more complicated, but just wanted to clear their names as they led a very hard life during the war from reading their army records.
My grandmother was Louisa King, so would have been Charles and Samuel's sister.  Happy to share any info.
