mystery of hughes family Easington
« on: Thursday 04 September 08 22:34 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I am new to searching my family history but have hit a dead end when i have barely started. My grandfather was John Edward hughes born  17/05/1917, He served in the 1st battalion Durham light infantry as a stretcher bearer. The great mystery is that he had two brothers John and Robert, and three sisters, mary , florence and ruth, i have no idea of the dates of birth of these children, we know little about the parents either, other than their names were Edward Hughes and Florence hughes nee Teesdale/teasdale?, so i am told the mother is buried in Murton cemetery. I have searched a variety of different dates for borth registration etc. to no avail, however as i understand the children at some stage entered a workhouse ( i imagine the whole family went together) my grandad managed to escape this somehow, also i am told subsequently some of his siblings, which ones i am not sure, ended up in a lunatic assylum ( i am guessing winterton) Can anyone help i don't know where to even start looking now, and have read that there is a 100 year block on the assylum records....is there any truth to this, as i know the hospital no longer exists and the records are at county Durham record office. I also know the father was a miner and the two boys had to go down the mines at a young age, but it is pure guesswork that they were at easington colliery......if anyone can give me pointers i would be so grateful

Hello Gen

To start you off here is the parents marriage.

Using the Free BMD website http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

In the Dec 1/4 of 1915 in Easington Edward Hughes and Florence Tearsdale
Ref 10a page 965.

Notice that Free BMD has an R in Florence's surname.

Will see what else I can find.

Your grandad appears to have been registered in June 1917 as just Edward.

There are 5 births of Hughes babies with the mothers maiden names of TEASDALE.

Use Free BMD click on births and just put Hughes and Teasdale as mothers name.

Rootschat does not allow us to mention those who may still be alive and a lot of his siblings were born in the 20's and therefore I can't type them out for you.

Shout if you have problems finding them though.

Thankyou Carol you have been most helpful, i found the five you mentioned however they are not all the names i had been given, 3 are correct, 2 i have never heard of although there was some talk of some deaths, the real mystery would be the names given to me who i cant find, is it possible a baby would be born without a record?

Welcome to rootschat gen!

If you use the reference and page numbers (and exact spelling of surname) given by Carol you can order the marriage cetificate online here:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Cost is £7, and its, quick and easy to order.

This marriage certificate should give the name of bride and groom's fathers, occupations, plus other useful information. This explains what to expect to see on the certificates:
http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/deaths.htm

Once you have the father's name, you can look for them in the censuses, where you may find them with parents, siblings, other family members - also find where they were living, their jobs, ages etc etc.  ;D

Freebmd is a wonderful site, all work being done by volunteers, but it is not complete. For this and many other reasons, some bmd's do not appear. I think in our research, most of us will be unable to find some ancestor's births, deaths and marriages, even though we know of their existence.  ;) Some are also given one name at birth but are known by a different name their whole lives. Makes the search hard.

Best of luck.

Hello Gen

Using Free BMD again(which as Ruskie says isn't complete yet) I have found the death of one of the Hughes babies.

Deaths Dec 1925

Hughes  Dora age 2  in Easington ref  10a page 500

It is possible that Lorna too died young, but you would need to search the full indexes(subscription or pay per view) to find that out,as is needed to find the remaining Hughes/Teasdale babies.

I'll try later for you.

Baby Lorna Hughes died in Easington in the Mar 1/4 of 1928 age 0.

Ref 10a page 546.

Lorna isn't a very common name so I would imagine that this is 'your' one.

Regards
