Emigration Record & Births look up Please
« on: Thursday 04 September 08 22:22 BST (UK) »
Hi Peeps  ;D

Mary Tivey b 1879 Nottingham married Aaron Bonser Ball 1902 Nottingham.

The 1911 Canadian census shows them in British Columbia "Conroy" (I think ?) They have two daughters with them - Winifred Lois b 1904 and Irene Grace b 1909.

Firstly, If anyone can tell me when they arrived in Canada I'd be very grateful - Both children were born Notts so they must have sailed between 1909 and when the 1911 census was taken.

Secondly, I would be grateful if someone good look and see if the couple had anymore children in Canada after the 1911 census and any other info would be extremely useful ;D

Cheers :-*

Jan,

The location is Comox on Vancouver Island. The death of Aaron Bonser Ball of Comox, age 62 in 1942/2/7 is on http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-1DAC6E/gsearch/Deaths#form. Also there is a death for Mary Ball age 54 in 1933 in Comox which possibly is his wife. I will pick up both records tomorrow and advise. These records show quite a lot of information depending on the knowledge of the informant.
Unfortunately the births of any other children would not show up in the BC Vital Statistics site due to the 105 year rule. Obituaries would be the best way to determine the children, however, I am pretty sure the local library here in Vancouver does not have the Comox/Courtenay papers on microflim.
I don't see a marriage for either of the two daughters in the index.

As a followup to my previous post, I found the family on FindMyPast travelling to Canada in 1901 as follows:
A. Bonser Ball, dep Liverpool 18 March 1910 bound for St. John, N.B. on the Victorian.
Mrs M. Ball, with Winnifed and Grace dep Liverpool 29 Sept 1910 bound for Montreal on the Victorian.
I suggest you have a look for the inbound records on
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/passenger/001045-100.01-e.php The records on this site are not indexed so you have to go through it page by page once you have selected the sailing form the information above. However, often the inbound records have more detail and worth checking.

Jan - Another interesting find.... maybe

In the 1911 census there is a Markham Ball (farmer) in the Comox district (Sandwick) which is outside of Courtenay with a son Cornelius Bonser Ball. Wonder if this is a brother? Anyway, I will check the death records at the local library for Markham, wife Lucy Maria, and son Cornelius.

I know the geography of the area since I grew up there.

Hi John :-*

Thank so so much for all your help  :)

I am really looking forward to your findings. ;D

Markham Bonser Ball and Eliza Goddard were the parents of Aaron. I didnt know about Cornelius as he isnt on the 1891 & 1901 census, I know he had sisters Eliza & Emma and a brother William Bonser Ball. Eliza (Mother) died in 1899, Markham then remarried to Lucy Maria Brettle.

Mary Tivey (Aaron's wife) is my main interest but anything you can find on the Ball family (when you have the time) would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers :-*

Hi Jan

I picked up the records today. The death record for Aaron Bonser Ball (1942) and for Markham Bonser Ball (1923) show parents to be Markham Ball and Eliza Bonser. Also the informant on Markam's death record is A.B. Ball, brother. So I think without a doubt they were brothers. It makes sense since they were only 8 years apart in age.

I stumbled on another record by luck for the daughter of Aaron Bonser Ball and Mary Ball (nee Trivey), Elanor Thora Ball age 17 years (1933). She died 1 week prior to her mother Mary. Aaron B. Ball was informant for both records.
Since Comox was such a small community at the time deaths were infrequent so the two events were side by side with sequential numbers on the microfilm reel.

I will PM you about getting these records to you.

John

I am new to this chat site so I haven't got it all quite figured out but I wanted to let you know that I have significant information for you re. Tivey, Ball etc.  My grandmother was Mary Tivey and of course my grandfather was Aaron Ball.  My mother was Winifred Ball whom you mention.  I live in Comox and have several cousins here as well.  I have a few blanks in my genealogy research so perhaps you can help me as well.
