My ancestor Benjamin Hilton appears to have lived most of his short life in Brettell Lane, Staffordshire. He was a Boat Builder who died in 1838 aged 38. I assume that he built canal boats. He could be the Benjamin Hilton baptised 1801 at Brierley Hill. I do not know this area at all but understand that these two places are very close.  Has anyone else come across the Hilton family? In 1861 Benjamin's daughter Emma married John Marchant, a Boatman, born Kidderminster. In the following censuses he appears as Coal Labourer or Labourer and then he disappears though I have not yet confirmed when he died. On the 1891 census  there is a John Marchant age 61 an inmate in the Kidderminster Workhouse, he was a boatman. I would love to know if anyone has come across these names or has any advice to offer.
Thanks

Assuming that you are not already aware of it, I would like draw   your attention ( and everyone else) to a  superb book called A Canal People by Sonia Rolt of the photographs of Robert Longden.

Just found there have been lots of posts since I was last here so I am going to fill in some information.
The book above was written by the first wife of my Great Uncle George Smith, son of George Henry Smith.  George Junior is my Grandads brother.

Yes I am related to Jeannette (CatsClaws) so we have found out, and have now met.  Her Gran Sarah was George Henry Smith's sister.

By the way "Youngtug", that film Painted Boats had many extras that were "real life boatpeople".  I have a copy - if you look at the pub scene, you will see my Uncle George with his curly hair - an extra in the film!

Jean - there are a couple of errors in your posts

the photo you posted is not in A Canal People but is in "Narrow Boats at Work" by Michael E Ware.  It says it is on the Grand Union Canal.
They have made a jigsaw from it - but not in its original place - in Lincoln of all places!

The photo you were trying to post with the horse is in fact my Uncle George as a boy with his dad George Henry (who married Hannah Statham).

I will try to post both images.  Please keep me informed of any progress or meetings and when I get a chance I will fill in more!

Hi, everyone out there with connections to the FRADLEY family.  My husband and I started to research his family tree in September 2009, and up to now have been progressing slowly.

His Grandfather, who he never met, was Charles Fradley, born in Odd Rode in 1891, to John Fradley & Eliza Jane Fradley (formerly Harrison), who married in 1880.

We discovered Roots Chat quite by accident on Sunday, after we got back from our first ever visit to Odd Rode.

We have a Birth Certificate for a John Fradley, born in 1859, to Benjamin Fradley & Ann Fradley (formerly Stanworth), and also some info from the Census in 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901.  As there seem to be so many Benjamin's & John's, we have been unsure if we are following this info correctly.

We are both really excited by the Posts we have been reading from the following people:

KERRY 1212, ANN COOPER, JANET SMITH, TONY1439, LINDARHEAD,VALIGENE

We have never seen photos of my husband's grandparents, let alone anyone who came before that.

I hope that, with your help, we will be able to find out a lot more.

Thanks, a lot.

A & B

I am interested in the Moore family.  I am looking for EUNICE MOORE born 1850, HillTop, West Bromwich. On her marriage certificate to Joseph Henry Cole (my grandfather) she is down as Eunice Moore, but the only Eunice I can find is called Eunice Hampson, all the details fit, except that name! Can you throw any light on the problem please?
I have her father as Richard Hampson and her mother as Sarah Hawkins. Sarah born 1805 Wednesbury. Where does Moore fit?      ???
Thanks,
Mavis
