Canal Boatmen and Women

On my tree I have Robert Doughty and quite a few other Doughty,s who owned and worked on canal boats also John Doughty .  his wife Ann Geary made a will  in the 1700s
she states that she is having a trow built at Stodds yard ,which when finished
is to be named {The Three Brothers  }.

In my ancestry I have an Eliza Doughty (Bn.c1831) married to a Daniel Barnett ( Bn. c 1823) my ggGrandparents, whose line I am currently working on.The census gives her birthplace as Worcester and her mother as Esther Doughty(Bn.c1798)  of Worcestershire, who was with her in Congleton, Cheshire in 1871. Daniel and his son William are boatmen.I know that the name is quite widespreadbut I wondered if any of your ancestry came from Worcester and if there was any connection. I haven't yet chosen which parish to go for. Perhaps you could direct me! Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Tony,
I haven't been here for a while but I am a direct descendant of Nicholas Fradley 1679  and Jane Holland.1672, are these the two you have.
My lot came from Gayton/Kingston, and were agricultural workers.
I don't know of canal links but often wondered how my great grandfather in staffordshire met my great grandmother in Lubenham, Leicestershire. The canals are near by??

Thomas appeared to be an agricultural labourer as they moved around several adjacent parishes , I found no record of any more Marriages in the films of Parish records available to me at LDS family history library. but the I.G.I. has a record of the marriage of Thomas to Elizabeth Pritchard at Stowe by Chartley on 20.7.1755.I double checked the parish record with negative result. I was beginning to think that they were common law marriages and have now only tenuous links through another Thomas and Elizabeth to Nicholas and Jane and an other Nicholas and Jane whose earliest entry in Gayton was a birth in 1646.I do have more detail but it is likely that you have already researched this. If you have or Know of anyone who has I would be interested to hear if you have had more success with the early marriages. The Bloor name crops up again later linked to my grandmothers family.

              The names do not sound familiar, but I will get my Doughty tree + information out and  get back to you saturday . My Doughty,s are mainly from the Brosley ,Madley area, Its great to find someone else doing the Doughty,s of Shropshire .Other surnames connected from that area  are : Bill , Geary,
Hartshorn and Smith .

        Hiram Doughty son of George Doughty and Margaret Hartshorne ( my 5 times gt Grandparents ) ,Hiram was born 1804 Jackfield ,Shropshire ,died 1875 ,he married Maria Wilkes (1st wife) 5-2-1833. Maria ,born Pershore Worcestershire.
children, George Hiram Doughty b1834 Pershore,Worcestershire.

 Ann Doughty,born 29-9-1834 ,married Thomas Clark Johns 1863.
Alfred Doughty born25-9-1836,married Harriette Dance 11-2-1862.

        Mary Ann  Birch ,Hiram,s 2nd wife
        son:  Robert Joseph Doughty born 21-4-1863, died 1863.
 Ann was born in Upton on Severn ,Worcestershire
also Alfred,he married Harriete in Claines ,Worcestershire.

George Hiram son of hiram married Elizabeth ? 2-7-1857 Claines Worcestershire.
I do not know the Worcestershire area at all but it sounds like  Claines and
Pershore could be Parishes. I hope this is helpful , Iwill be in touch again if I find more for you.

235 entry 470 Daniel Barnett 34 bach. boatman Green Lane. son of Daniel Barnett ,boatman witnessed by Charles and Martha Doughty.It dos,nt say who he marries, but Free b.m.d. may have her.

Hi Tony

On a previous posting you told me about the font that was given by Elizabeth Price in respect of her brothers death Charles, well I have been trying to find it, Terry the vicar from All saints has e-mailed me and found a font waiting to be erected in his church that he dosen't no where it came from all that was on it was that it came from the old village. Also been in touch with Chester archives and they are going to do a search for any info on the trustee's of the methodist church apparently my grandad was also one.  Anyway Kind regards Janet
