*Completed*William and Sidney WHITE in 1881, 91 or 1901
« on: Thursday 04 September 08 07:48 BST (UK) »
This inquiry replaces an earlier posting when I was looking for the same people in 1861 and 1871 (see: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=325246.msg2059246#msg2059246)

I would be grateful for help in finding the following people in the 1881, 1891 or 1901 Censuses.

William George WHITE, baptised Butleigh Somerset on 23 March 1826. His wife may be named Charlotte or Caroline.

William George WHITE (son of the above), born about 1851 at Catherington, Hampshire. Possibly this is the William White who appears at 130 Cricklade St, Cirencester, Gloucester in the 1881 Census.

Sidney G WHITE (also a son of W G WHITE above), born about 1852 at Chew Magna, Somerset. Possibly this is the Sidney White who appears as the landlord of the Lamb Inn, Back Lane, Chippenham, Wiltshire in  1881.

Cicely Harriet Anna WHITE (daughter of W G WHITE), baptised on 4 June 1856 at Doulting Somerset. She is living with her (widowed) sister Mary Anna BRYANT at the Cross Keys Inn, High Street, Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire in 1881.

Mary Anna BRYANT (daughter of W G WHITE), also baptised on 4 June 1856 at Doulting Somerset. She is living with her sister Cicely at the Cross Keys Inn, High Street, Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire in 1881.

Can anyone see these people, or other likely entries in 1891 or 1901?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards

Philip Candy

Many thanks Ian

This is really clever. Thanks so much for suggesting Catherine Matthews.

It's now starting to look as if William may have married three times, and also that the children from his third marriage took the name White, instead of Matthews.

Thanks a lot for this thought provoking suggestion.

Kind regards

Not sure where the MATTHEWS came from, but she was Catherine Jane SOPP, married Thomas Matthews HARRIS. The eldest daughter was Catherine HARRIS according to 1871. By 1881 the three children were MATTHEWS and so was she, living with her mother Jane SOPP.

I wonder if she divorced her husband and took his middle name instead?

In any case, this is a great bit of detective work; many thanks Ian.

I used the Harris name and found the baptism of two of the three children in Wootton Bassett Wilts:

Catherine Sophia Perry HARRIS on 1 May 1870
Richard John HARRIS on 20 Oct 1873

Not sure, however, about Alice or why the children took a different surname by the time of the 1881 census. All a bit of a mystery!

Many thanks

Philip
