McGarry Cumberland
« on: Wednesday 03 September 08 22:01 BST (UK) »
This is all the information I have for my GG Grandfather

William McGarry born Ireland c1830 died in Cumberland in 1899
Married Ann ?? 1859 ??

William was a miner and in the 1881 census they all lived at 7 Botany Street, Workington, Cumberland.

Children: Margaret Ann McGarry , John McGarry, William McGarry, Charles McGarry, Elizabeth Jane McGarry

Elizabeth Jane married Robert Topping in 1896.

Do these names mean anything to anyone???  I would love to find an irish connection but I have nothing really to go on apart from the fact that my Grandmother (Elizabeth and Roberts daughter) used to visit Ireland as a child.

Thanks

TOPPING, THORPE

June 1859 Cockermouth 10b/697
William Mcgarry
Ann McGarry

The 1871 census says that Ann was born in Workington but I think if we go back further, we'll find that her father at least  came from Ireland. They were very probably cousins.

I'll keep looking.

1851 census
57 Middle Row, Preston Quarter (Whitehaven)
John M'GARRY (wid) 62 Coal Miner, Ireland
Ann 20 Workington
John 14 Driver in Coal Mine, Workington
Mary MURRAY (inmate, unm) 24 Reeler in Thread Manufactory, Workington

A submitted entry in the IGI suggests that Ann's mother was Ann too.

This gets more interesting by the minute.

I can find no Ann Mcgarry born in Workington in censuses '51 or '41

There is another marriage in Dec 1850, Whitehaven of a William McGarry with a possible spouse, Ann Kennedy.

Then - a death of a William McGarry March 1854, 10b, 315, Whitehaven

Did Ann marry two men called William McGarry?

Curiouser and curiouser.

Sorry, I didn't see Geoff's discovery of Ann in 1851, so forget my barmy theory.
