Richard Feltham
« on: Wednesday 03 September 08 14:50 BST (UK) »
Hey all,
Is anyone able to look up baptism, birth, parents of; Richard Feltham born around 1818. I can't find anything much about him.

He was a mariner and married Mary Jane Whitenham in March 1842 in Fareham
Mary Jane was born in Soberton Fareham 1818
I haven't been able to locate them on the 1841 census together, I have tried so many spelling variations i'm going insane!

They had a daughter Charlotte Feltham born 23rd nov 1845.

Richard most likely died soon after Charlotte was born as Mary Jane married again 1848 William Dear. They inc, charlotte are on the 51 census in Fareham.
Then Abraham Toovey/Tovey 1854 another mystery man. (bit of a serial marrier) ::)

1891 Mary Toby is living/lodging in gosport next door to her daughter Charlotte and family and on the other side is Fred tovey  Nos 13, 14 & 15 titchers court.

1901 charlotte Clark is living with most of her grown up children in portsea & a nephew Frederick Toovey.

Iv'e hit a wall with the more important 1st husband, Richard Feltham father of Charlotte, not knowing where he originates from etc.
If anyone can find anything that puts him and Mary Jane together, a wedding date, childrens births etc, I would be extremely grateful.

Many Thanks

What information is given about Richard's father on his marriage?

MARY JANE WHITTENHAM
RICHARD FELTHAM
Marriage:  About 08 FEB 1842   Fareham, Hampshire

Marriages March quarter 1842
FELTHAM  Richard     Fareham  7 116
Whitenham  Mary Jane     Fareham  7 116

It is especially important as you have no knowledge that Richard was even born in Hampshire, particularly since he was a mariner and probably at sea at the time of the 1841 census.
Does his marriage certificate specify what sort of mariner - merchant seaman or Royal Navy?

Soberton baptism
19th August 1821
Mary Jane Whitenham - James and Lucy

1841 census possible

HO107 389/5 folio 32
Fareham
Jane Whitman 20  F(emale) S(ervant)
Anne Whitman 13
both born Hampshire

Soberton baptism
16th November 1828
Ann Whitenham - James and Lucy

sister Tamar was also in Fareham

HO107 389/6 folio 36
West Street Fareham
Tamar Whitenham 15 F S
born Hampshire

Soberton baptism
8th October 1826
Tamar Whitenham - James and Lucy

The only Hampshire baptism I can find for a Richard Feltham is

Gosport
9th April 1809
Richard - Richard and Sarah

which would make him 12 years older if he was the correct man.

The actual baptism entry itself would give Richard senior's occuaption. The name and occupation can then be cross checked against the information given on the marriage certificate to see if it agrees.

Richard junior's married sister was in Fareham on the 1841 census and the following censuses in Portsea.

CHRISTIANA EDWARDS FELTHAM
JAMES PULLY
Marriage:  14 FEB 1841   Alverstoke, Hampshire

Hey Valda,
Thankyou for all the info.
I will get my fine tooth comb out and sift through.
Did you spot the un-deliberate mistake on my posting?
I only just noticed it as I read through.
I am such a muppet...of course I wouldn't find Richard and Mary together on 1841 census as they didn't marry until 1842 doh! and he had departed before next census.
I am awaiting the marriage cert for them.
I have Charlottes birth cert which of course doesn't give much clue except his name and profession as Mariner.
I got excited a few times with 'Feltham Sailors' who turned out to be Tailors  ::)lol
Right I'm going to be going over all this new info till the early hours.
Thankyou again.
You're fab!

1841 census possible

HO107 389/5 folio 32
Fareham
Jane Whitman 20  F(emale) S(ervant)
Anne Whitman 13
both born Hampshire.

This is promising, The address is Bathing House Lane in Fareham, next door to the police station.
on the 1851 census when Jane/Mary/Mary Jane is married to william Dear they are living in Bath Cottage fareham. and somewhere along the line I remember they, Mary and Charlotte, were next to a police station and thinking well at least they were safe...like you do...
and there was a Feltham Policeman somewhere in the equation though not in the right area...now all I have to do is go over the entire Feltham/Whitenham population including all those spelling errors and find it again  ::)

There are only two Feltham Hampshire baptisms for the couple Richard (just as likely to be a mariner) and Sarah.
By the 1841 census Christiana Feltham was already married.

RICHARD FELTHAM
SARAH EDWARDS
Marriage:  12 JUN 1808   Saint Marys, Portsea, Hampshire

CHRISTIANA EDWARDS FELTHAM
Christening:  07 DEC 1810   Holy Trinity, Gosport, Hampshire
Father:  RICHARD FELTHAM
Mother:  SARAH

CHRISTIANA EDWARDS ROBENA FORBES FELTHAM
Christening:  03 JAN 1813   Holy Trinity, Gosport, Hampshire
Father:  RICHARD FELTHAM
Mother:  SARAH

But the age given on the censuses for Christiana indicates that this may be the same child baptised twice.

1840 aged 30
1851 aged 40
1861 aged 50
1871 aged 60
1881 aged misenumerated in the surname Dempsey aged 70
1891 aged 80
1901 aged 90

Deaths Mar 1906
PULLEY  Christiana  95  Winchester  2c 75

Burial
21st March 1815 Gosport
Sarah Feltham aged 25

no burial for an elder child called Christiana.

You are still however a long way from proving this family of Felthams are connected to the Whitenhams. For that you firstly need the marriage certificate of 1842 and the full baptism entries. The 1813 baptism will certainly give the occupation of Christiana's father. Without proving at least that the father's name was Richard and his occupation was the same on both seta of records, you could be investing time exploring a totally unconnected family.

Spot on!

The second record indicates that Christiana was born in December 1810 and that her father was dead.  He was a seaman.
