1841 census Newport Pagnell Workhouse
« on: Tuesday 02 September 08 21:11 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have a John Course, 51 and Sarah Course, 41 in the 1841 census. in Buckingham. It appears they were in the District Newport Pagnell Workhouse at the time. Can anyone give me information on this workhouse and if there is the complete 1841 census available for that workhouse? Many thanks,  Jim

Hi Jim

I am from Newport Pagnell.

The workhouse later became the Renny Lodge Hospital and that is where my gran died in 1961. Sadly, the building has now been demolished and the area turned into a housing estate.

Here is a link to give you a little more info about the building and town.

Hi Dinie,

Thanks for that link. Life must have been very tough for people living in Rennie Lodge when it was a workhouse in the 1800's. I'm afraid I haven't been very successful at finding information on my Course family ancesters who all lived in the Emberton, Olney, Ravenstone area, except information contained in the census. Apparently no grave sites have been found. My grandmother, who was born in Northamptonshire, was the first of her family to come to Canada in 1903. Many thanks again,  Jim

Jim

Just had a look on Findmypast and the 1841 census is on there with your John & Sarah in the workhouse records. Unfortunately, the only information is their names & ages.

The reference is HO107, piece 58, folio 8/2, page 1.

On the 1861 census, there is better news. John & Sarah are now living in Emberton. John is age 71 andshown as an Ag Lab & Sarah is age 62 and shown as a Lacemaker. I can't make out John's birthplace (looks like Granchester but I can't post the image on this board) but Sarah's is Olney.

The reference for this one is RG09, piece 875, folio 91, page 10

I can't find them on 1871, so it is possible they died before then and Findmypast do not have the 1851 but I hope someone else may find them there for you.

Hope this is some help

Unfortunately the SOG link on the page doesn't work but you may be able to contact County Hall in Aylesbury to see what information they may hold.
