Name Change.
« on: Tuesday 02 September 08 12:06 BST (UK) »
I have recently come across a relative who seems to have changed there name without getting wed.
She had the surname Turner untill the middle late forties, but has the surname Sumpter on her death cert in the early seventies,l cannot find any
suggestion that she wed this Sumpter,in any of the usual record search sites.
So was wondering could she have changed her name by deed poll,if so is there any sites that l could look on to confirm this.?

Provided there is no intent at deception /  fraud, a name change can be effected simply by starting to use and hence be known by the new name.

Deed Poll isnt required / mandatory - no sites are known to list these - the job would be pretty tricky anyway !

Hi Wizz,
Did your relative die in 1870's or 1970's??

the reason I ask is my great aunt was known by another name and then in the 1970's (when she emigrated) discovered her name was still Sumpter!
